Jurnee Smollett has joined the cast of NBC's pilot Bad Girls.
The project is a remake of the British television series of the same name which ran for eight series until it was axed in 2006.
Smollett has now signed up for a lead role in the remake, TV Line says.
Her character is said to be a famous rapper who is jailed after being caught by the DEA.
Smollett has previously appeared in shows such as Friday Night Lights, Full House and The Defenders.
NBC's remake of Bad Girls is being developed by John Wells, who also adapted the British series Shameless for the US. His other credits include Southland, ER and The West Wing. -
