When Mr. Garrity handed over the small silver rectangle, Santiago was embarrassed when he didn’t know what it was, and Buddy Junior had laughed at him. “It’s an iPod, stupid!”
“Yeah, I know,” he’d said, even though he didn’t even know how to turn it on. He didn’t know anything about putting music on it or anything, so Saracen showed him, even copied his whole library for Santiago when they were in study hall in the computer lab.
In the old days, he used to listen to whatever was on the radio with the boys, usually reggaeton or rap. But Saracen’s stuff was cool, different, diverse, and Santiago found himself listening to words in music for the first time.
And he came to realize, listening to Blue Eyes, you’re the sweet to my mean, that he was listening to how Matt Saracen fell in love with Julie Taylor.
And he knew he was in fucking trouble.
