A/N: I've been very, very busy with work and study. I'm going to have a final exam (for the 1st semester) this weekend. So I hope to get back to writing again at the end of this month. Hopefully, this shot one-shot will lead me back to my regular writing routine... Hugs, Blues :)

The Song of the Ocean
Jack’s feet had a mind of its own. Leaving Ennis a bit behind, he sped up when he heard the sound of the wave hitting the shore and rolling away, singing to him the song of the ocean.

Flea was fidgeting in his arms, his ears pointing while his eyes darting around with interest. Not so many people were at the beach at this hour of the day. Jack squinted at the sun that was sinking at the horizon, painting the ocean and the sky with lovely orange color.

With a small whoop, Jack hopped down from the Great Highway to the sand. He heard Ennis follow, could hear the soft thud thud sound of Ennis’s black leather shoes when he walked.

“You think Flea is scared of the ocean? I think he’s shaking.” Jack stopped walking and looked down at the little dog.

“Maybe he’s excited.” Ennis said plain.

“Well, don’t you think there’s some kind of a monster in the sea?” Jack ignored his comment. “…the kind with, like, hundred hands that could drag you down to the belly of the ocean.”

Ennis shot him a frown. “A monster?”

“Yeah. Lots of them. I bet they have their own kingdom and everything down there.”

Ennis snorted. “Ok.”

“You don’t believe me.” Jack narrowed his eyes.

“Well, yeah, I don’t. There’s not enough oxygen down there for any living things.”

Jack grimaced. “You’re no fun.”

Ennis smiled and watched Jack walk a few steps further and let Flea down. They both laughed at Flea who whined when his feet first touched the sand. It took him a few beats to get used to the feeling and then he started to sniff around within the length of his leash.

Jack looked over his shoulder to Ennis and said, “I haven’t been to the ocean much when I was a kid. You?”

“I haven’t been to the ocean before I came to San Francisco.”

Jack’s jaw dropped. “You kidding me?!?”

“Nope.” Ennis shook his head, digging deep into his jacket pocket when the cool wind blew. “I went to L.A. once for a training when I was in college but I didn’t get near the ocean, just looked at it from the window in my room.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.” He gave Jack a small shrug. Jack made a sound in his throat before turning to Ennis.

“I didn’t jump into the sea the first time, too. I just sat on the beach and built sand castles.” Jack walked back to stand beside Ennis as Flea’s leash started to wind around his calves. “The sea was beautiful. I didn’t want to ruin the scenery.”

“You swimming in the ocean wouldn’t ruin anything.”

“I know. But back then, I was a clueless man who had just come out to my friends and family. The sea is so blue, so sparkling. I felt so small that I was afraid the wave would swipe me away and I’d be gone forever.”

“Ah…the blue and sparkling monsters…”

There was a faint smile on Jack’s lips when he took Ennis in with his eyes as blue as the sky. “Yeah. It took sometimes to get used to the feeling of the sea wanting to swallow you whole. But after a few years, I’ve leant how to swim against the tide and how to float on the white foams. Now I surf.”

“You surf? Why haven’t I heard of this before?”

“Because my surfing skill sucks.” Jack laughed. “It’s not something I want to brag about.”

Ennis flicked his eyes up to the ripe sun then. He tried to recall if he had ever seen the sunset this close. No. He hadn’t. It was so close he thought he could grab it in his hand.

“The sunset is beautiful.” Ennis whispered.

“Better than just watching from the window of the building, right?”

“Sure is.” He simply agreed.

“Yeah.”

Jack bent down to take off his black converse and socks. He then folded his jeans to his knees and flicked his eyes up at Ennis. “I’ll take Flea closer to the sea. You coming?”

Ennis shook his head. “No. Leather shoes.”

“Take them off!!” Ennis looked around, and shuffled his feet. For a moment, he thought if there really was a monster in the sea. Jack playfully slapped his thigh.  Like always, he could read Ennis better than himself. “You know, my picture perfect sunset will always include you. And I was joking about that monster.”

Ennis winced down bashfully at the sand and muttered, “You go ahead. I will be here, waiting. Guess I, ah, got a sand castle to build.”

Jack smiled broadly at that. He reached out to tug the hair behind his ear. “Alright.”

And before Jack strode off, he leant in for a kiss which Ennis had wanted ever since they were here. There were people walking by, but it might be the magic of the sunset, the song of the ocean, or something else that soothed Ennis’s mind. He found himself closing his eyes and waiting for a kiss that he knew would transport them to another place, another world where there were just the two of them. Jack’s lips were soft, but firm on his-like Jack’s hand that was cupping his face.

“Won’t be long.” Jack breathed on his lips. And as Ennis watched Jack and Flea jogging to the wave, bare feet and all, he wondered if there would be the day he could run on the beach with Jack, surf the wave and just be together under the huge blue sky.

That day would arrive. Tomorrow, maybe. Who knew? Everything could happen. Looked at the sun there. Who thought the center of the universe could be that small. Ennis narrowed one eye and reached out. Slowly, he wrapped long fingers around the sun until he had it locked in his palm.

“Gotcha…”
