So far just the Prologue and Chapter 1 are here.. i'll update when i get a new chapter up..
Prologue: In the Valley of the Shadow of Death
Sayid dug the graves, side by side with Juliet. Part of him was thinking, why bother? They were Others, they didn't deserve graves. Deserved to rot actually, To be eaten by worms and other nasty things. The woman digging the grave next to him was an Other too, maybe a helpful one, but would always be an Other to him. An enemy to be watched just the same. It scared him how well kept that suspicious soldier persona even now.
She handed him a bottle of water and he took it, nodding thanks without a smile. Those were few and far between these days. The last person who he'd given a smile to was gone, buried as well. That grave he'd dug himself too, and didn't even use a shovel. Wanted to feel the sand and dirt that would cover her.
"Hey?" asked Juliet, touching his shoulder and he jerked away from it, not angrily just wearily. "you need a break?"
"No..." he responded, continuing to dig, feeling his back ache a little. "I want to get this finished, I can't stand the smell of these people.."
Juliet didn't respond, didn't have to. She'd known what he'd lost and who he blamed it on. She was smart enough not to overdue it. She hated the people she'd worked for, and knew there was enough time in the world to make up for it. She wanted to bury them with the same relish as he did, wanted to be rid of it once and for all. So she worked along side him, both of them focused on their goal.
Sawyer stood aways away, leaning against the van and casually drinking a beer, as if he hadn't just killed another man in cold blood. Hurley gave up trying to make conversation with him, helping Jin clean up the area. Sawyer was grateful for the break from him. Nothing against Deep Dish, but his thoughts were elsewhere.
He was trying to hink of anything but Cooper, or Kate for that matter. Both of them playing on the opposite ends of the spectrum. Like a tug of war in his tortured mind. He loved her, he knew that, but he didn't know how he could after all this. He didn't even know who he was anymore to be honest. He'd lost himself back there in that brig, when the rage blackened his thoughts.
He didn't want to be near Kate, didn't want to be near anyome to be honest. Pulling back inward was the saftest place. So he leaned against the van, picking up another beer and watched Blondie and Ali dig the graves of those bastards they'd iced. Now there were too people who knew the score. You couldn't get away from it, life would always come back around and make sure you paid for your sins.
They did their work in the Valley, cleaning it up as best they could for when the hopeful suckers who went to the tower came back. Sawyer himself was just gonna sit there and drink his beer. Hell he'd earned it.
Juliet could see him from where she was. Both these men fascinated her. As did Jack and many of the others. So many facets, so much pain. If only they knew the truth. All of it. She dug the graves, wishing she could tell them everything. But not yet.
Chapter 1- The Girl in the Room
She watched him on the beach, paying a visit to the grave that she knew he went to on regular basis, when no one was around to watch. After the divisiveness of earlier it was almost a relief to see a simple guesture like this. Of some form of loyalty. Juliet found herself very amazed at human nature sometimes. Even the people that seemed to be the worst, had qualities like this. It proved to her that a sheet of paper detailing a life meant nothing, unless you saw things like this.
She'd watched Sawyer earlier, take the side of John Locke, and several others as well. Had seen the torn nature of Kate, who couldn't seem to make up her mind. And knew that it took alot for Sawyer to separate himself from her. She was a student of human nature and learning about these people was the only good thing that seemed to come out this hideous experiment.
Turning in the rain, she decided to give Sayid the privacy he needed, and walked off into the jungle, getting far enough out as to not rouse any suspicion. Closing her eyes, she took out the device and clicked it, and the jungle disolved in a plain room around her.
She changed out of her clothes and into her normal scrubs that were required, removing the devices attached to her head and went to write her report. She wrapped it up rather quickly and opened the door, and walked down the hall, past several rooms. She dropped her report off in his office, not wanting to stay long.
"That's it for today." she said coolly, hating the man for making her a part of this. "I'm staying on Sheppards side and you've got the other..hope your happy."
"Very good Juliet.." he told her. "We can freeze time for now and we'll both drop back in the wee hours..get some rest."
She didn't answer, just left the room, heading for a specific room. Getting there she used the key card to open the door and took a chair, sitting down next to the girl in the bed. Juliet took her hand and brushed her hair out of her face. Then loosened the restraints just a little. The girls fingertips were bandaged, and she carefully checked them, electricall burns were always mean looking.
The girl woke up and looked at her through eyes that looked fuzzy and slightly confused. The look of someone heavily medicated. Juliet smiled at her, trying to be comforting.
"Hey..." she said softly. "How you feeling?"
"I feel...eh.." the girl whispered in retrun, blinking against the light. "Is he ok? I want to see him..."
"I know you do..he's the same as always..I'll do what I can..I promise ok?"
"ok.." she said weakly, closing her eyes again.
Juliet smiled at her again, brushing back her blonde hair from her face she went to sleep.
"Get some rest Shannon.." she whispered. "I'll take care of this.. I promise.."
Juliet left her in the room sleeping and stepped out, finding Ben there. She was thinking of all kinds of ways she'd like to hurt him right now.
"It's quite fascinating how she keeps asking for him don't you think?" he asked her, looking in the room at the sleeping girl. "Tell me something Juliet, do you think she remembers dying.."
She looked at him coldly.
"I think she rememberes alot of things Ben.. keeping her drugged won't change that, won't change it for any of the others too." she told him, pushing past him. .".now if you'll excuse me I gotta get back.."
Ben shook his head, knowing he had to as well.
"Don't get attached Juliet, remember our work.."
She ignored him, passing by several rooms with several people in them, people she knew in person in the VR but here were just lab rats, they all were. Going back into her room, she got herself some sleep and then when she woke up, put herself back in. It was morning. She came out of her tent and saw Sayid sitting by himself, looking at the water.
Time to go over and talk, another day of pretending it seemed. But caring, well she didn't have to pretend that. Not at all... She was passing it one to him. If only you knew the truth.. she thought as she talked to him.
Figured I'd need a place to post it :D
