Randomness...
I'm gonna do my thing on Jack sooner or later but right now just felt like being random tonight. Maybe to complain about the treatment I see on message boards. Which is precisly the reason why, with a rare exception or two I don't go on them anymore. Our new Lost Writers Island and The Treehouse are about the only places I go now. Everywhere I go is either ruled by Nazi mods or is overrun by angry, bitter people who refuse to acknowledge a different opinion from theres. I'm not trying to bitchy or mean but it's the truth.
I was always leery of Fishbiscuit cause of what i'd heard but gave it the benefit of the doubt. Was funny until it started getting vicious in many places. If you don't go with the standard opinion you tend to get yelled at or ostracized in a certain way. People have different opinions with regards to the show and everyone is entitled to them. Even *gasp* Jaters. I've know a few who were very nice and hospitable to me and it bothers me the viritrol I see on both sides now. I think the best way to represent the things you like is act respectful toward those who disagree with you, no matter how nutty their opinions are. We all have different opinions and interpretations and different perspectives as well. That's what the boards are supposed to encourage. Exchange of ideas.
My father taught me the best way of working an arguement is to see both sides and to be able to argue both. And sometimes to listen to others opinions. Cause who knows? You might gain an interesting perspective on something. My grandfather used to say 'when you talk your saying something you already know, when you listen, you learn something new'. It's good advice. Close-mindedness comes on both ends of the fence and that's how dialogue breaks down and things are said and done that cause arguements and misunderstandings.
I use to talk to Jater named Islandtracker awhile back, and in those conversations we both gained a new perspective on eachothers ships and characters WITHOUT changing our minds on our chosen ships. I learned about Jack, and he learned about Sawyer and found we agreed on more than we disagreed on. That's the beauty of this. Conversation. Likewise on the Treehouse, I see perspectives I wouldn't think of otherwise, from some who don't actually ship. And playing Role Play as well, writing for different people and seeing other characters in different lights allows me to write better, and articulate my opinions more clearly. And as much as i'd like to share those I don't see many places on the boards where an open opinion is wanted. And I won't go with the party line. My favorite characters have flaws, as i've written and I won't overlook them. And I won't unneccearily bash anymore either. Criticize where warranted but not bash. It demeans us all.
The thing about Lost that makes it a great show is the characters are not black and white, carboard cutout heroes, they have terrible flaws and insecurities. And they do things we don't like, make stupid decisions. Like real people. Jack isn't any better than anyone else, he's just as fucked up as the rest of them, he has his good moments and bad ones. Sawyer as much as I love him can be a selfish jerk who says and does dumb things that make you want to smack him. Kate's the same way, and her choices are open to criticism. Sayid has a laundry list of offenses that I can't excuse no matter how much I might love and understand his motivations. There's nothing black and white on there and we all have our own perspectives on this. And if it's a fair discussion when those opinions and perspectives are encouraged, listened tto, and considered..
This is like a novel but my point is, free discussion is about the free exchange of every idea, no matter how ridiculous. You have to the right to have an opinion and to have it critcized as well. That's the nature of things in a free society. Because of that I refuse to be close-minded in any way. And my Oceanic Six post on Jack will bear that, just like with Sayid and Kate it will be balanced. If I ever get to it..
