Looking at the Oceanic Six Part 2- Kate

Mar 26, 2008 13:13

ok well I promised this so i'll do it.. been a busy bee lately and gotta work on my Chapter 5 hehe but this first.

The Whole Truth and Nothing But...

Nothing amused  me more than hearing Kate, our cute little fugitive, stand up in court and say "not guilty" to her laundry list of crimes. Kate has literally gotten away with murder now hasn't she? And yet she denies guilt still.

The true measure of redemption is a willingness to not only face your crimes, but to take your punishment as well.  It's no use taking a stand if your not willing to take the consquences of it.  What are Kate's consquences for taking out an insurance policy on her jerk father, tucking him into bed, dousing the house with gasoline and blowing it sky high?  We know she did this..

She admitted it..

The one time in her life when she actually admitted guilt.

KATE: You asked me why I -- why I did it. It wasn't because you drove my father away, or the way you looked at me, or because you beat her. It's because I hated that you were a part of me -- that I would never be good. That I would never have anything good.

Now Kate how are you not guilty now? Admit it in a place where there are no real consquences and then deny it when it matters. Using your 'son' as an excuse of why you can't go to jail. What was your excuse before that?

The thing with Kate is she never takes responsibilty for the things she does. It's someone else's fault and not hers. There's always an excuse isn't there?  I mean who did Kate blame for this if not herself?

Want the answer?

KATE: Because, mom, the last time I tried to talk to you, when you got sick? When I risked my life to see you, you screamed for help and called the police!
Risked her life.. natch.. but Kate didn't get hurt did she? Nope, her first doctor crush did. All because  mommy called the police on her, just like she said she would, and that's why all this happened didn't it Kate? And those guys you shot at the bank, it was all their idea too right?  Had nothing to do with  it at all. Just an innocent bystander weren't you?

Right....

We know what Kate is, and innocent isn't one of them. She desperatly wants to be good dosen't she? Wants to have that life, to deny that she ever did anything wrong. But when she gets it, realizes maybe she dosen't want it. Or just plain can't handle it..

Oh but Kate isn't this exactly what you want to be? A suburban housewife, married to a cop(which takes stones btw i have to admit) All that's missing is the kid.. but that comes later dosen't it? First we gotta ruin this guy Kevin's life. Poor bastard.. got hit by Hurricane Kate.

How amused was I when Kate told Sun that lying gets to be a habit for Juliet? Cause I recall, Kate's pretty damn good at this too, and it's quite the habit for her too. And at least Juliet isn't hypocritical. Her lies and manipulations have a greater purpose than Kate's. Kate's are mostly self-serving.

Let's ask why Kate was so pissed off at Sawyer for his con on the group. Why do you ask? Consider the similarities between what Sawyer did in TLC and what Kate did in BTR. There's alot of them. Lets do this.

BTR Micheal is poisoned... Kate is there to help him out.
TLC Sun is kidnapped.. Sawyer carries her back

BTR A person whose been under suspicion the whole season, Sawyer, is accused.
TLC A person under suspicion is accused, Ana-Lucia.

BTR we learn at the end that Kate cojoled/manipulated/suggested to Sun to poison her husband to keep him in off the raft. Which btw served Kate's purposes quite nicely no matter what happened. She'd get herself a spot no matter what happened.

TLC we learn at the end that Sawyer and Charlie teamed up to stage a kidnapping to further divide Jack and Locke. And this served Sawyer's purpose by giving him a chance to take the guns.

Kate was PISSED at Sawyer at the end of TLC, and I wonder if part of it was simply that he'd ripped her off teeehee. Or maybe that Kate is supposed to be the only one to lie/con/manipulate the people that care about her.  I think she was pissed cause he had the audacity to do it to her that's all.

That's not how it's supposed to go is it?

Final addendum on that comparison.. despite the reveal to the group in both episodes, only Sawyer got ratted out for his island crime. All because Charlie had a guilty concience. But did Kate? No.. cause she chose a better accomplice.

Sun, who still went by the impression that Kate did this for her. Maybe that was part of the reason but the real reason was simpler. Kate wanted on that raft. She wanted to run. And she'll do whatevfer it takes.

See the worst part about Kate is, she's got a perfectly good guy here..

And yet she only seems to want him when it's conveiniant for her. See Sawyer is bad.. he's everything Kate dosen't want to be but deep down knows she is. And the thing is, Sawyer pretty much accepts her and loves her as is. Makes no pretensions and won't l et her get away with shit.

He knew you all along girlie and that pisses you off.  Like the song goes 'fool them all baby but I can tell..your no stranger to the street'.

But the biggest enigma about Kate, other then why she just can't let herself love Sawyer, is why the hell isn't she paying for all the crap she's done. Everyone else is. Kate seems to get a pass thought.  Her crimes are not revealed. Her life is not in shambles. She's not checking herself into an asylum, or popping pills like candy. She didn't lose the man she loved and she isn't killing for a sworn enemy. In fact, it looks pretty damn good for her dosen't it? So good she ignores Jack when he says they have to go back.

All made up and pretty, and free. Got a life, everything she wanted. Including a kid..

That isn't even hers... but she sure as hell acts like he is. How the hell Kate got him is still a mystery. But it dosen't sound good. That's Claire's child, should be calling Claire mommy. That's the biggest tragedy I can think of.

I'm not one to wish ill on anyone, and I did, and still do to a degree, like Kate. But enough is enough. Sooner or later she's gonna have to seriously pay her dues. Everyone else is it seems. How is that fair?  If this show has to do with redemption for our sins, how can it get away someone getting away scot-free with theirs?

Sorry Kate but your time will come..

And hopefully very soon.. It's well overdue that's for sure.

(my next part will be looking at the good doctor, whose more fucked up than he realizes.)

kate, lost
