This will be part review and part rant i'm sure by the time I get done with it hehe but anyways.
I was thinking on the fact that all I can hear is bitching and whining about promos and lack of some people and something really did come to me. It it is a very entertaining tv show. And in all tv shows there are gonna be times when certain characters are in the bakground and when they are up front. It's a cycle. Does it take away the quality of the show itself if Sawyer is absent forr an episode or 2. Of if Jack gets more time? So what? Each character on the show has a purspose it's gonna be all one all the time.
The promo for next week didn't show alot, so the fuck what? It's cause they want to keep you guessing. For the spoiler junkies this sesaon must be driving them crazy. But for me, the reason I hate spoilers is cause it's like looking ahead in the book to see what's gonna happen. Instead of having the patience to ride out the ride and rewarded. People just don't have patience these days. They want to know what's gonna happen now. Too me that's no fun.. I like solving puzzle sometimes without the box in front of me.. I like watching the puzzle slowly develop into a picture.
For example, the sneak peek, which I watched btw, I found interesting. Instead of being disappointed I was intrigue by what Dogan said to Sayid. Offering a clue to what was gonna happen. Every man has a dark and light side, like the backgammon pieces. What he's telling Sayid, and D-C confirmed this to a dgree in their interview was that we will find out Sayid's true nature, whether he'll stay on the side of good and and fight the infection, or whether he'll sucuub and become a creature of darkness. That's fascinating to me, causei it gives a glimpse without giving it away.
Another bone of contention is that certain people have their Binkys (using a term I hear on Sports radio, meaning a favorite or a crush) and they have their stooges (the ones they hate) and there is nothing in between that. Some love Sawyer and hate Jack, loving everytthing the fromer does and picking everything the latter does, in spite of whether they are wrong or right. There are people like others and hate others. I don't watch the show like that anymore, I have my favorites and my not so favorites, but I take the show as a whole and in this case I dont' get as pissed off if my particular Binky isn't on the show that day.
For example: Saydi wasn't in the episode last week, and was barely in this one. Cause he didn't figure in that particular plot. But I didn't complain about t his, cause I'm a fan of the show and not just one character. My paricuclar Binky is Sayid of course, but does that mean everything he does is right, or awesome, not neccesarily. He's done some shitty things and keeps falling back on old behavours that make me want to smack him. And I love the character not just in spite of those facts but because of them. Cause I'm invested in that sense.
But it dosen't mean that I always condemn other characters actions even if I didn't like them. Like Jack. He's not my favorite but i'll give him props if he does something good or cool. And he does do it occasionally. Like beating the snot out of Ben or not just blindly giving Sayid a pill without questioning it first. Or turning in his father for drinking while operating. Jack does do the right thing sometimes. And even Kate has a few moments of being decent, she gets credit for that. Even though I can't stand her.
A word on Sawyer... people who bitch and complain about when he's not on should note that he's probably in the top 5 for screentime over the course of the show. Just because he wasn't in Season 4 enough is no reason to trash it either. Love it or hate it on it's own marirts. To me no Season really sucked.. some just had more bad than good to some people.
In Season 4, the only episodes I actively hated were Eggtown and Somethinbg Nice Back Home. Not a bad record for me as far as a seson goes for me. Did Sayid's increased screentime havve something to do with my liking of it. Of course it did, but I liked firguring out the plotline, I liked Des and Sayid on the freightro. Love The Economist and The Constanst. Love Danieal Faraday.. those were good things. It didn't suck.
Season 5 serveral characters diaappeared for a good chunk of time, especailly Des who was in maybe 4 or 6 epis. Sayid vanished for long stretches of time too. Both actors had personal and legal stuff going on behind the scenes so I understand that. And maybe Josh needed time off during season 4, did it ever occur to anyone that was possible? But overall I enjoyed thos 2 sesaons better than the second half of Season 3, which seemed to meander a bit. The best being Desmonds epis, Enter 77 and Greatest Hits.
My point is we all have our tastes and our reasons, but when we take the show at face value and not let our predjudices get in the way, it's actually a very good show, with mysteries to solve. For any crriticisms I may have of it myself, i'm still watching it right?
And one last thing... can't wait to see Maggie again. I think the writers can redeem themselves with what they did to her character early on by giving her a well-written story this time. Just like they are doing with Emilie now.. so kudos to that.. Bring back the blondes :D
