Sorry but you will have to wait for a longer answer on "The Descent". Generally we agree in all the main points, I think. I´ve too much work to do at the moment.
But as I really love this interesting discussion with someone about books I don´t know many other persons who read them as well. (Sometimes I think I have strange tastes in reading. Well...)
I didn´t mention "Prey". But: What about the following ones? Do you know any of them? I would like to hear your opinion.
1. Robert Zelazny: Princes of Amber.
2. Marion Zimmer Bradley: Mists of Avalon.
3. MZB: Darkover Series.
4. Michael Crichton: Timeline.
5. Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code.
6. Stephen R. Donaldson: The mirror of her dreams. And: A man rides through.
These are some I read in english. May be you have some other books too to discuss?
OK as soon as I have a bit more time I will find out about Ali´s and Ike´s (possible) vaccination and reread some other things which I can not remember clearly now but I always wanted to ask someone how they understand them.
Hope to hear from you again!

As for the book list, I read Timeline but it was a really long time ago. I have yet to read the DaVinci code. Have you read Dan Brown's Angels and Demons? It is the prequel to the DaVinci code. I loved it, couldn't put it down. I'm hoping to start the DaVinci code soon, but with work, schoolwork, etc I havent been able to find the time. Being away from home, I dont have my copy of the Descent or I would go back and re-read some parts, I'll have it sent to me.
Have you ever read anything by James Rollins? He is one of my favorite authors. He wrote: Excavation, Subterranean, Deep Fathom, Amazonia and Ice Hunt. Ive read all of them except for Ice Hunt, which is sitting on my shelf next to the DaVinci code waiting for me when I have the time. Ive also read a lot by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, such as: The Relic, The Reliquary, Mount Dragon, Riptide, Thunderhead and The Cabinet of Curiosities. All excellent reads. Im going to try to get my hands on some of the books you mentioned this weekend.
I always thought I had a strange taste in literature as well, but Ive passed some of my books around to friends of mine (The Descent most prominently) and they have continued around the Universities. I found one of my books in the room of a friend of a friend at the University of Maine. I think most people just don't know what they're missing.
Enjoying this very long distance exchange. Drop me a comment back!

Hi!
Still have to reread a few parts of "The Descent" too. So we´ll be able to clarify our questions we had. But I´ve got so much work right now I will have to be very careful not ending up on the couch with the book for a few hours (happened last time I tried to reread my favourite chapters).
In fact I´ve read "Subterranean" but I can´t remember anything right now. I put this one on the "reread-list" as well. Could be our next topic if you like. I don´t know another book of your list. (The difficulty of the language used in a book is essential for me to read it in english actually. I should be able to enjoy reading and not looking in the dictionary all the time-- so may be I´ll try one or two you´ve mentioned in german. That would shorten the time it takes to talk about them.)
Well as for strange tastes: Like you I have to read a lot for my job so in my time off I want relax and don´t think too much. That gave me the "Descent" every time I read it so I think I´ll try "Angels and Demons" because you said you had similar feelings reading it, didn´t you?
Have a nice day!

I have a tendency to get sidetracked by books as well. Thats how I ended up reading The Descent as many times as I did. It was interesting every time, a good escape from reality.
You read these books with a dictionary? That takes dedication. Its impressive that you speak a second language though, I wish I did. I only speak English, and minimal Spanish and Italian. A good portion of my family is actually german, I have a german last name, some of them speak it actually but I never picked any up.
Subterranean was good, I remember liking it a lot, but its been awhile since Ive read it as well.
I actually have to write a paper on "Angels and Demons" and thus have to re-read it, so we will be reading it at the same time. I expect to start shortly.
Well if we're going to chat back and forth like this Im gonna introduce myself. Nicole, 18, female Biology student at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Nice to meet ya. :)

Hi Nicole!
Well, my name is Gabriella and I finished studying german literature and geography a few years ago. And I think studying was really a great time in my life.
I tried to summarize our ideas about "The Descent" but failed for my tiredness. Nearly the same happened earlier this day with "Subterranean". When I looked at the pages I recognized I don´t remember anything (rereading a few parts will help my memory-- hopefully).
But I succeeded in another thing (claps her shoulder; looks triumphantly): I ordered "Angels and Demons"-- unfortunately it will take about ten days to get it. But it won´t help if I read it in german.
I´m glad for this "two-continent-reading" :-) because otherwise may be I would never have read this one and at least being able to discuss it afterwards. There is so much more fun in it then.
I wish you a good start of the week.

P.S. I use the dictionary for the words I don´t know. Unfortunately it doesn´t help a lot for insecurities in english grammar....

Sorry this took so long. Things have been crazy here since finals are starting up.
I just started re-reading Angels and Demons recently, I have to write a Philosophy paper on it.
I'll comment again sometime when I have more time! :)

Good luck for your exams!
I will start my vacation tomorrow morning-- heading off to Vienna!
But-- because usually I´m thinking of my poor unlucky friends who have to stay at home-- so I´ll think of you too.
hugs
