Memo to Lara Croft: Thank you for bringing it to my attention that poverty exists in the world. I was not currently aware that terrible things happen to people.
Also, thanks to cnn.com for maudlin headline that essentially said: General poverty around the world really sucks. They deserve the Peabody for the lightning fast breaking of that story. And thanks too for featuring Angelina Jolie's name and face five times on the front webpage, letting me know that not only has she kiddie porned her newborn for charity, she also found childbirth "terrifying."
I can see it now: Headline: Jolie Surprised by Infant's Head Tearing through her Vagina. Tomorrow: Diana Ross Confounded by Painful Shits following Meal at Indian Restaurant
So basically, this is cnn.com's summary of the last few days: Jolie: Labor was scary! Buy my daughter's image. Oh, yeah, poverty and stuff.
And yes, yes, before everyone hops on the "But she and Brad gave it to charity" tirade, I'd like to say that I'm aware of that. I'm sorry, but even if the money went to charity, the idea of selling one's newborn daughter's image just seems sick.
I officially hate someone more than Bono now. At least he's campainging a cause that can be helped. If I contribute money to help find a cure, that will help AIDS. Africa's other problems of poverty and civil war are things I can't do a lot to help out. Many of the poverty-stricten areas need sweeping agricultural reform, not free handouts from guilty, egotistical movie stars, and as for the civil wars, a small handful of people there need to stop being such fucking genocidal assholes. Yes, the social issues will remain, but within a militant group, someone at the top saying, "Hey, let's quit all the rape and genocide" seems like a good first step.
I know that I have things really good. I feel like one of the luckiest people I know. I know that there are billions of people suffering in the world. I try in my own way to help the world. I read the news; I donate money to the Humane Society, AIDS and cancer research, and homeless shelters, I am part of advocacy groups for the mentally ill; I give change and buy juice for homeless people on Kirkwood; I write letters to government officials regarding issues about which I feel strongly. I'm not trying to toot my own horn, just point out that I care, I really do. I do not need someone who used to fuck Billy Bob Thorton and who, right now, is probably wearing a nursing bra that cost more than I'll make in a year to tell me about people's hard times.
The Pitt/Jolies are trying to help people in Africa. Wonderful. cnn.com: they are not Mother Teresa; report on the issue, not the celebrity raising it. Report...um, what's it called...news.
