The Hatter Ain't the Only One Who's Mad

Mar 07, 2010 22:21

So, I thought that it might be an interesting story for people to hear about what happened on my way to see Alice in Wonderland, simply because it is quite possibly one of the most epic things that I've ever done in my life.  And afterwards, some reviews/recommendations so I can kill two birds with one stone.

Right, so.  To set the scene, my mom offered to pay for the tickets so I could drive my sister to go see Alice in Wonderland.  As it happened, a friend was able to come with, so there's three girls in a car.  The movie was to start at 4:15, and I said we'd leave at 3:30 to get tickets and seats.  Good so far, yeah?  Well, my mom had an errand she had to run that instant, and since I was going to be using her car, we had to go do it before the movie.  So, while she went and did her thing, I took the car to get the tickets, since the theater was close by.  Got the tickets, went back to pick up my mom, and we went home.  Time is now 4:00, so we're starting to get a little freaked out about missing the movie.

We drop off my mom, and the time is 4:15.  When the movie is supposed to start.  Now, I like the trailers, but I don't mind missing them, so I figure, eh, we can probably get there before the movie really starts.  But it's about a 15 minute drive to the theater.  This means it's time for me to make like Toad from Wind in the Willows and DRIVE.

So, I stay a consistent 5 miles above the speed limit, something that I never do, cause I'm obsessive about driving laws (I know, I know, I'm wierd XD), and my sister, my friend, and I start plotting our course of attack.  Sis is designated to run and grab seats and we get specific on where to get them, Friend and I are to get pop and candy.  Everything's going swimmingly, we're making good time, and then I start hitting traffic lights.  So now we have three girls in a car, screaming at the lights to 'CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE!', and basically chanting that, and hitting the gas as soon as the cars move.  We find this hilariously funny, because every time we start to yell, the lights change right away.

I pretty much careen down the highway, and we're screaming at the car at the light to turn, turn NOW!, and it does before we even get close. We get to the theater, tickets in hand so we don't have to search for them, and I'm about to turn into one space when I see someone further down the aisle pulling out.  We start freaking out in the car, and go to park there, and an odd dance ensues as the car backing out pulls out, then I reverse, then they reverse, then they drive away and I get to the spot.  Sis gets out of the car, my awesome rainbow hat on her head so we don't have to search for her in the theater, and she takes off running to go get seats.  Friend and I get out, start jogging towards the doors, and there's a sign there saying that the 4:15 showing of Alice is sold out, so I get major kudos for getting the tickets ahead of time XD

Friend and I manage to get to the front of the line for popcorn, etc by sheer luck, and the time is now 4:27.  I've made a 15 minute trip in 10 minutes, and am feeling bizarrely proud of myself XD  Muchies obtained, we race to the theater, and who should we see at the end of the aisle, looking for seats?  Sis, who can't find any together because the theater is packed.  By more sheer luck, we do find seats in the very front row just as the movie starts.  So after a bit of shuffling around, we get seated, and the movie starts.

I admit, I went into it with a lot of skepticism, since the plot didn't seem that close to the books in the trailers, and everything seemed to feature Johnny Depp pretty exclusively, which made me waver even more about going to see it.  I love Johnny Depp greatly, he's an amazing actor, but it's Alice in Wonderland, not The Mad Hatter.

But Burton did a beautiful job with it!  The plot was interesting and I'm pleased with how many lines, etc, they used from Through the Looking Glass, and the graphics were spectacular, and I got to see it in 3-D, how awesome is that?  Depp was not the focus, but he did an amazing job on-screen, and everyone's acting was, in my opinion, extremely good.  But best of all...

I WANT THAT WARDROBE.  Like, seriously, people, I would -kill- to have half of Alice's dresses, or just... practically any outfit in the movie.  *babbles*  Gah, so pretty...

Ahem.  Come to the end of the movie, and I'm very proud that I correctly identified Alan Rickman's voice XD  And then I started laughing when it turns out that Christopher Lee had a role in it as well.  Of course, I also decided that I spend too much time watching movies when I started spouting off random facts about said actors.

So, movie over with, we can go home and chill for awhile, after one last stop.  On our way out to take my mom for her errand, we drove past a Walgreen's that had half of its sign dead.  This led to some interesting signage:  Pnuemonia Available...  something or other, and some other notable ones.  But the reason for this particular pilgramage is because of one particular ad.  So, we get out of the car, stand in front of the sign, and wait for it to go around so we can take a picture of:

WIN
SOLD H

Admittedly, it might have been better if it had actually said 'sold here' instead of 'sold h', but the fact that the sign said Win was sold made it epic.  Pictures taken much to the amusement and confusion of traffic, we get out of the lot and go home.  I will post the picture of the sign as soon as I can get it off my cell XD

Now, onto the recs.

The Art of Lying:  Hilarious movie, with a ton of TV actors that I love and recognized, including Tina Fey.  Made me very grateful that people can lie, and it was insanely funny.  Definitely watch it.

Taking Woodstock:  I had my mom worried about me because when we watched it, about twenty minutes in I turned to her and said that I kept expecting these two guys to kiss, because it just seemed like there was a lot of tension between them.  She thought I had a problem because I was seeing gay guys everywhere.  I totally got her back though, when maybe ten minutes later, one of the guys was kissing another guy.  O'course, I also got freaked out that my gay-dar worked for a movie.  Highly strange.   Anyway, great movie, the soundtrack was flippin' amazing, and I think everyone should see it.

Kate West:  The Vanishing Files:  I know I reviewed this one earlier, but I've since beaten it, and I have to say it really wasn't worth the money I paid for it.  If you can find it for about $5, go for it, because the plot is pretty interesting, and the graphics are nice, but the gameplay was really, really repetitive, and it got really annoying after about case 5.

Zombieland:  Go see it.  Just... do it.  Totally worth any and all money you spend on it.

And to finish us off, three videos that have been blowing my mind lately.

I couldn't embed this video, so here's the link to it, and yes it is the same song as above, but a different video that is just as awesome.
