Being Both Unique and Connected

Mar 27, 2009 18:10

It seems to me that one of the real challenges of relationships is being the unique individuals that we are while at the same time being in respectful, if not loving, relationships with those who differ greatly from us.

Maybe I would do well to speak only for myself and say that this is a real challenge for me. Sometimes I err in the direction of metaphorically driving a stake in the ground and declaring my individuality. At other times I err in the direction of hiding who I am in an attempt to be or stay connected with others.  What I want to do is be who I am and be connected with others.

Part of the challenge is finding those who accept me as I am rather than as they want me to be. Part of the challenge is also about me accepting others as they are rather than as I want them to be.
