Black smoke, casinos, hegemony

*deep breath*

Okay here we go.

I read Ig L's column on Sunday about being Catholic and not being Catholic on SunTimes. It was complete and utter BS. He was obviously using secular terms to measure the Church. Not only that, he unbashedly use his own history as a Catholic, or a NON Catholic, to criticise an institution of God. Where did he get his examples from? The Internet? Geez. Look, there is religious and secular. Secular viewpoints can be spilt into many, including liberal and conservative. One cannot, or at least I insist that one cannot, use secular terms to describe what is effectively not a secular organisation! Does he even understand the rationale behind certain issues? What right does he to write in a NATIONAL newspaper bad mouthing a religion? Do people get away with bad mouthing other religions? Nope. But its the Catholic Church, a religion most non-Catholics, secular people tend to dislike and hate anyway.

What an arsehole. To think I thought highly of him at one point in time.

Right. Next

TWO is the word. TWO INTEGRATED RESORTS. Lets not kid outselves. Its TWO CASINOS. Pappy has outdone itself this time. All the while the public was talking about one casino, pappy went ahead and disclosed that it was thinking of two all this while! What a laugh they were having in the boardroom. Stupid Singaporeans. We have once again been led by the nose without even knowing it. That is simply the power of hegemony.
To be honest, my critical ability failed me today when I read the front cover. I was actually lulled by the coloured pictures and the numbers dangling in front of me. Good what right? I mean, 35 thousaand jobs, loads of money, more employment opportunities and more fun! Whee! Lets all get on the ride to the land of wealth and happiness.

Fuck that.

Let me say this; its plain greed. When will it stop? It is clear the govt thinks and acknowledges that the casino is a 'bad' thing, in that it produces detrimental effects, like social problems etc. It shields this badness from the local population by putting restrictions. In effect, it is the outside people, the foreigners with loads of money, who are targetted. Its okay for them to gamble because they get the bad effects, not us, the locals.

Drugs is also 'bad'. Let's also make this an opium smoking hub. I'm pretty sure there are millions who would spend money to get in. Just disallow the local populace to not smoke then. Hmm?

Yeah sure, you can say its not that extreme, its not true etc. Well, its the logic that matters. Remember Pappy is about pragmatism so maybe I'm making a moot point.

Finally, black smoke has gone up twice. I hope and pray white will come soon.
