drop it like it's hot

yesterday i had my cellphone, keys, digital camera, mini tape recorder, and 2 spare batteries in my purse.

i was at henry street, and luke lit a cigarette.
i smelled some sort of burning aroma and figured it was from his lighter.
so we are just sitting there, i had my purse and coat on my lap. i repositioned myself on the couch and felt something burn my hand. so i jumped and threw my purse and coat onto the floor.
luke looks at me and says "you alright?" in that luke-way of making me feel like an idiot that he does so well. so i pick up my purse and dump out it's contents, expecting to see flames coming from something, and i touch each object to be sure that something was indeed burning.

and the side of my mini tape recorder was hot and melted.

paul enters the room and we show it to him. he takes out the batteries which are fire-hot and the probable cause of the heat.

the recorder was switched to "pause" which means it couldnt have been doing anything in my purse, so the batteries couldnt have been in use at the time. plus they'd been in there for like a week. and they weren't in there backwards. its a radio shack recorder that i've had for years and duracell AA batteries.

any suggestions as to what the hell happened to make my awesome mini tape recorder melt?
