[MEMORIAL DAY] at the beach castle

Friday, 3:01pm

Annie shut down her computer and lifted her purse from the bottom of her desk. A three-day weekend beckoned and she'd packed the night before. All she had to do was go home, change into a pair of jeans and hit the open road.

The sun meant that she could put the top down on the Corvette she'd inherited from Auggie and though she was fairly sure that Joan had stopped tracking her cars, she decided about an hour out of town that she didn't care if her boss knew her final destination. It had been a long time since she'd been to Chesapeake Bay and she was going to enjoy it.

An hour from her destination, Annie pulled into her favorite little grocery store for a bottle of cheap wine (as it was rude to arrive empty handed), and twinkies. For some reason, she always wanted twinkies when she was at the coast and this wasn't going to be any different.

The moment she hit the driveway, butterflies took up residence in her stomach and she did seven miles an hour all the way to the massive house in the distance. Once she caught sight of the Aston Martin parked in the driveway, the butterflies multiplied and her smile kicked in.

He was here. He likely knew she was here.

Leaving everything inside, Annie exited the car and walked past his, running her hand along the side panels with a happy sigh. It didn't matter what had happened between them, this house - his house - would always feel like a safe haven to her. Like home.
