To say that he took her breath away when she turned and saw him standing there would have been an understatement. All she could hope for was that she didn't look like an idiot when she finally picked her jaw up off the floor.
Clay couldn't believe Annie's dress. Red, his favorite, and a ball gown. She looked fantastic, and he was too concerned with picking his own jaw up off the floor to worry about hers.
On the dance floor, Annie found it remarkably easy to slip into Clay's arms and just relax there. After several minutes, she murmured, "You're so good at this, I don't know how I could have let it slip my mind."
The smile on her face was soft, as if her mind was replaying a pleasant memory that only the two of them would know.

Clay nodded once, not wanting to appear too full of himself. "We don't dance nearly enough." Then he leaned closer so he could whisper in her ear, "And for a couple of spies, that's really a shame."
Doing her best to ignore the way her pulse quickened the closer he got, she inhaled deeply to steady it when he whispered in her ear, her smile widening. "It really is."
Annie decided to take advantage of their close proximity and slip further into his embrace.
"I love it," she managed, though she had to stop talking after that under the guise of concentrating on the dance.
The truth was, there was no modesty in Clay and they both knew it. That made her smile and the memories flooded from there. "Vienna is so pretty, I'd never been before this trip."
"It's one of my favorite cities. I don't come here nearly as often as I'd like."
He supposed he inherited the love of the place from his mother. Porter always loved going to Vienna, mostly for the music, but the environment in general was one of her favorites as well.
It was an automatic response, because she hadn't known that, though she figured that, in the end, there were a lot of things she hadn't known about him. It forced her into another silence and she decided to just enjoy the last song of the evening with him because she could.
She thought about telling him she was only in town for the ball itself, but then found herself confessing the truth. "I've been here all week and I leave Sunday morning."
"That sounds--" Dangerous, she thought first. "Lovely."
She knew full well that it would be a very slippery rope between the two of them, especially since she knew as well as he did that as far away from home as they were, it would be easy to pretend that nothing bad had happened between them. And, as the last sounds of the orchestra faded, Annie realized that she didn't care. She wanted to pretend.
"Would you like to join me tonight," she whispered against his ear as the couples around them began to applaud the music. "I don't want to go back to my hotel alone."

Nodding, she said, "I'd love to."

He did, however, lead her around the dance floor.

The way Clay looked at her said he loved her more than he could possibly articulate, especially after everything that happened between them.

"Thank you, Clay." She lowered her eyes and added, "You look amazing, yourself."

He was trying to be modest, though that was difficult while dancing with Annie.

They were in a different country and he planned on pretending they were still together as long as she'd let him.
