Went to "The Nutcracker" last night at the Opera House with a friend.
What a beautiful place, and what an amazing show. We had great seats though.
It has always been a dream of mine since I was a child to see that show, but I was never able to get around to it.
I feel inspired by it you know. The romantic set pieces, the soaring score, the majestic story, it was a fine aesthetic experience, and one that I don't get very often.
Reminded me of the time I went to Wellesley College and saw their orchestra play Beethoven's 9th. It was Spring time and a beautiful night, so they opened up the doors to let the sunset filter in the hall as the orchestra played. Quite a remarkable moment in my life.
Or, watching Maestro Ozawa's last concert with the BSO at Tanglewood, on a sunny August afternoon. They played Symphony Fantastique that day, and it was glorious.
Anyway, people should have more of these moments I think. We don't have them enough anymore. Moments were art moves you and inspires you. We sit at our homes watching Superman Returns on our 5.1 digital surround DVD set-up, but does that move us?
As a musician I used to have them all the time back in college, when I performed on stage, but not really anymore, which is a damned shame. Hopefully that will change, I am looking into more performing outlets right now.
Yet, there's nothing like watching people perform art on stage for you. They put it all out there on the line. You feel a connection to their souls. They communicate thoughts and emotions in a way no video game or TV show could. It's very tactile.
So, if anyone wants to go catch a Broadway show, or a BSO concert give me a ring.
Also, I saw on the news tonight, The Brockton High School Marching Band is performing at Governor-Elect Patrick's Inauguration this Thursday. Man, these kids get all the fun stuff, we never did anything like that when I was in the band.
