“Thunder and Longing”

“Darcy! Get me the graph and the telly. There’s a weather disturbance somewhere, 10 miles from here. We should get there quick!”

“Oh, not again Jane. We really don’t have to go to every minute disturbance. You panic in every thunder and lightning that happens to be in the area. Seriously, what’s wrong with you?

“You know the drill, Darcy. We have to get data in every abnormal occurrence. Even the slightest presence of lightning can give us vital information to strengthen our theory. Oh not that, I said the graph! C’mon, hurry!”

“You know we’ve got more than enough evidences, Jane. I don’t know what else you’re looking for. Except…”

“Quick! Get the van moving and tell Erik that we’re coming back in an hour. Oh, where’s the telly? I told you t-- ouch!”

Jane dropped the telescope, hurting her foot. Sighing, she quickly reached for it and ran to the van, where Darcy was already on the driver’s seat. “Go!” Jane exclaimed. It would be a 30-40 minute drive, she thought. She looked through the window as the van turned to the main road. The night was calm and humid, and the air was making her hair stick on her face. She didn’t mind. She loved the night air. In fact, she wished that the wind grew stronger, and clouds would begin to rumble, creating a thunderstorm right above them. And the heavens would open and a mystical path would appear, and… Bump!

“Sorry, bumps. It’s dark and I can’t see the road much. Sorry.” Darcy explained, looking apologetically to Jane. “You might want to buckle up your seatbelt. It really gets bumpy ahead.”

“Oh!” Jane realized that she forgot about the seatbelt. She buckled up and grabbed the detector. “It looks like it’s developing into a thunderstorm, and it’s slowly moving… Towards us! Quick! Before it’s gone!”

Anticipation and excitement grew inside her. She secretly wished with all her heart that this is it. She looked again on the detector and now the disturbance was moving faster, but it would still take 20-30 minutes before they would point meet with it, she estimated.

Sighing again, she looked again through the window. It was almost four months since that life-turning event. Since then she was always finding a way how to concretize her Foster Theory. But deep inside she knew there was something she sought, even more important to her… And she longed for him so much.

He promised. She thought. He promised that he would come back. She clings for that promise until now. But even then, she wanted to find out what took him so long. The last time that the most unnatural occurrence of the worm-hole called “Bifrost” was when he last saw him. Since then every disturbance that they investigate was all but “natural”. She didn’t want to believe that the Bifrost was gone. It was too painful to accept. She must not accept it. As an astrophysicist, there are certain occurrences that even science calls a mystery, and even if the Bifrost was gone, there must be countless ways on how to travel through space and time.

Having thought of that, she began to feel disappointed again. Maybe this is just another “natural” disturbance, just like the few others. But then again, she did not want to lose hope. She must not. There was that familiar ache in her chest again that she would feel every time she thought of that… She hated thinking too much.

“Jane! I can see the clouds bearing the lightning. Wow, it’s fast! Should we drive towards it?” Darcy told Jane, snapping her out of her reverie. “Maybe it’s too dangerous - Maybe we can slowly walk towards it. Let’s park here.” Darcy came to a full-stop, and Jane quickly ran out to the thunderstorm.

As Jane looked up to the disturbance, she felt tingling on her knees. She held on to the telescope, and grabbed her neck-strapped camera. She took a few shots from it. The shots she took were spectacular. She has not appreciated thunder and lightning more than this before. It was a wonderful feeling. Amidst the loud banging and roaring sounds, she felt calm and completely secure. It was like she was wrapped by a warm, mysterious force…

“Jane! Run! You’re going to be struck!” Jane shouted to her, as she noticed that she was not moving from her spot. “Jane!!!”

Jane did not move. Maybe she can’t hear Darcy because of the loud sounds, or maybe not. She was still gazing through the thunderstorm, admiring its beauty. As Darcy realized that she was still not running from it, she hurriedly ran to her.

“Jane, are you crazy? Run!” Darcy shouted, desperately trying to make her hear her. “JANE!”

A big bolt of lightning struck near Jane’s spot. She realized the danger she was in. She quickly ran to the direction of the van but a second bolt of lightning was directed to her. She gasped, and yelled for help. “Aaaahhhhhhhh!!!!”

Darcy leaped and hugged her away from the lightning, just a few meters from the struck spot. They both got to their knees and ran to a safety zone. They watched the thunder clouds moving fast to the east. After a few minutes, the thunderstorm was gone, and the night was calm again.

“It’s gone…” Jane half-whispered, sighing heavily.

“Seriously Jane, what we’re you thinking? I thought we were just going to gather data, not to get ourselves killed!” Darcy angrily told Jane, as they were nearing the van.

“I’m sorry Darcy. It’s just that… I spaced out…”

“Spaced-out? What? Are you out of your mind? It was a thunderstorm, Jane! You couldn’t have spaced-out! It’s impossible with all the ruckus coming from it!”

“I’m sorry…” Jane couldn’t say anymore. She knew that it was her fault and Darcy was just concerned.

As they drove their way home, Darcy was still complaining and lecturing her not to do it again. Jane stared through the window, sighing every once in a while. Another false alarm, she told herself. Maybe this is pointless. Maybe in reality she was going nowhere, and these abnormal disturbances were just giving her false hopes…

No. It’s too late to stop now. Everything she studied for, all the sacrifices… She knew she must not give up. Everything that she believed, and the events that changed her beliefs and faith must not all go in vain. Again, that familiar ache made her chest tighten…

Darcy, noticing her bestfriend’s unusual silence, suddenly felt concerned from being angry. “Jane? I am sorry. I know I don’t mean what I said a while ago. Oh, have you prepared for the party with Mr. Handsome? Jane?”

Jane was still staring through the window as she noticed Darcy was also staring at her. “Oh! Come again? The party? Ah, yes… Do I need to prepare anything?”
