“The only constant thing in this world is CHANGE.”
The world is in a brink of a never-ending evolution and later on becomes a revolution in every aspect of its existence. It is not only Mother Nature that contributes to its change, but also other factors. These consist of the elements constituting earth itself, such as the waters, land, animals, and others. But the primary agent of change in this world is the ultimate being God has ever created: The Human.
Tracing back to the earth’s past, it is evident that human, as the arbiter of all things big and small, has been creating big leaps and changes through revolutionizing the way he lives and feeds himself. As crucial changes come, he must be able to adapt with the changes that he ultimately made. Because of this, if we compare the earth before, as in from the ancient or stone age times, and to this present times, we can say that the world has gone through drastic changes, and these changes continue to progress through time, and as time passes by nearer to the future that humankind sought, the changes that occurred takes only a small amount of time for the changes to be completed, as compared before.
The fact that is inevitable to accept is that humans are trapped in the euphoria of not having satisfaction even though his needs are already met. They still sought of something far greater than what they have now. Because humans have greater power and excellent capabilities than any other living things, they too gain the belief that they can achieve whatever they want to achieve and the confidence gaining more knowledge and skills to achieve that goal. Truly, humans want of getting what they need and desire and the urge to go beyond to quench their ever elusive satisfaction come together and results to one thing: the desire to improve oneself.
Because of the ever growing demand and the fear of supply shortage caused by humankinds’ hungriness for satisfaction, economics and commerce are born. A group of people produce human needs and in return a group of people also consumes what they have bought from the producers, and vice versa. This process of give and take relationship has been present for many centuries now, and has been the mode of commerce and way of living since then.
And this leads to the generation of new terminologies; two of these are the producers and consumers. In layman’s terms, we can say that the producers are the product and service companies that are sprouting today and the consumers are us, who are buying and enjoying the products and services that they are offering.
This has been apparent when we take a look back in the past, the earth’s history. Here we can trace back the economics and society of the past, what are their roles and importance to humankind, and its effect to the world.
The first ones who have practiced this kind of living were our ancestors. “Bartering” was the first mode of commercial selling before. Two parties are involved in the process, in which they will choose an item from the other party and then give an item in return which has more or less (or if they feel like) the same value as the item being exchanged. That’s why it’s called barter system, because the cost for items in exchange is also an item. But this mode of exchange is not standardized, and it may cause inconsistencies because the cost of an item is not constant and is changing. In addition, the consumers get what is just being sold, no more or less. So, people sought for another mode of exchange of goods that will uplift the problems concerning this sub-standardized system and change the way economics run the society.
As time passed by, humans realized that they need something to standardize their mode of commerce. So, they decided to produce and create an item that will become the standard and monetary fund for all things that are buyable: MONEY.
Money has created a bug impact in our lives, especially today, because the world is run by money. One needs money in exchange of almost everything. It has somewhat eliminate most issues concerning commercial strains and standardizing issues that has improved the way our commercial businesses run now.
Through this, people can concentrate on how will businesses and companies improve their products and services to meet customer satisfaction.
So, humans thought of something that will revolutionize their way of living. To improve the products that they sell, they need something to hasten the processes and techniques to produce quality products and services that will give utmost satisfaction to the customers or consumers.
Way back in the ancient times, and up until the early 1900’s, societies have been greatly dependent to crops and agricultural products, such as rice, corn, and others. This has become the main means of supporting lives by the government at that time. This was the agricultural era, where people tend to find more ways to revolutionize and improve the quality of their tools and techniques in an agricultural sort of way. But the main process still remained this way: Farmers plow their fields and harvest the food, deliver it to the market place, the food is being processed manually, and people get what they choose among those food that is being sold. People want something out and beyond from it; they need something that will exactly suit their needs.
The next one was the industrial era. This era boomed in the 1900’s, when the population soared higher than the statistical charts, and the law of supply and demand is being outstretched to its limits and boundaries. Demand is getting higher than usual, thus more supply should be produced to compensate to the ever growing society. So, more manpower should be applied.
But this was not enough. Instead of more manpower, speed was much needed. So what was the solution for this? Scientists thought of a way on how to solve this by copying and duplicating human functions: the MACHINA, or machine.
With the help of machine, and remodeling and multiplying the number of these entities, it revolutionized the processing and manufacturing of many basic commodities needed by the booming society, specifically when it comes to food. Faster manufacturing and more supplies made became possible because of this invention, and less manpower was needed than usual. It gave convenience to the people and eased the way of how manufacturing should work. Hence, it was called the Industrial Revolution. More and more companies turned to industrial means of business, buying and investing mainly on machines and other technologically advanced tools and techniques to uplift the state of their business and of course to compete head on to their direct competitors of the same nature of business. But one fact remained the same, people still tend to choose from the selection offered to them by the suppliers and companies.
And here comes the greatest invention man has ever created since the world began, and until is still the reigning king of inventions: COMPUTER. It computes, processes and gives output in a fast and convenient way. With chips and wires and bits and strings, almost everything is possible with the use of computer. And then, many companies and industries indulged into this new type of technology, either by putting up a business and create more hardwares and software applications to improve computers, or use the computer to improve and hasten the processes of their business.
Because of the computer, Internet or Ethernet became possible. This revolutionized the way data is sent, retrieved, stored and processed. It became a gateway to many things that was again impossible before. It is like an open book where sources are available anytime and anywhere. This was called the Information Revolution. Many terms were introduced, but the most significant entity that marked the change of everything in the world of marketing was the Electronic Commerce, or E-commerce.
Because of this, companies turned their focused in advertising and showcasing their products and services through the web. Many of them invested more on this aspect, because they know that internet now is the most widely used medium of almost everything, especially by their target prospects or customers of their business. They know they can profit more if they invest more on this aspect.
But, it still doesn’t change the “Get what is being offered to you” mentality.
And now, people became explorative and eventually became more demanding. They researched of more ways on how to alleviate the convenience and satisfaction of people.
The revolution that have passed, Agricultural, Industrial and Information transcend boundaries and have met up into a common point. Companies used one or more of the technologies coming from these revolutions to come up with a better idea of revolutionizing.
Through the convergence of those three entities, many advancements and opportunities came into being, as well as trends that set the standards of the modern world today.
When we say customerization, marketing revolves and lives because of customers, or the consumers. Without them, a business cannot last for long. The second one is community, of course, because marketing is inside the walls of economics and society. Community is involved in marketing, vice versa. The channels, or the medium that is being use to market services and products, and as well as the tools and techniques that are being utilized to achieve convergence. The competitive value, or how significant is the business to the society. And the last but not the least, the choice control, which refers on how well does the business handle customers and their choices and demands.
With the consistent collaboration of these factors contributing to convergence, many opportunities and trends were created.
And because of the emergence of convergence, a new breed of consumers came into being: the PROSUMERS.
Before, customers buy things the traditional way by choosing, ordering and getting what the service or product provider offers them, the way as it is. This simply means that the people are being dictated by them, and this nullifies the term “customer”. So, market analysts and technology-oriented people thought of a way on how to eliminate this limitation and boundaries.
As we can obviously notice nowadays, we can come up with the answer to the problem. The key word is “customization” of products and services, meaning, it is the customer that chooses how products should be made and how will it look like for his or her maximum satisfaction. This means that the world of marketing has turned upside down, in a sense that the customer dictates the market. That’s why they are called prosumers, because they are proactive and they take the initiative of doing something to feed themselves with the necessities and to fit their liking, unlike before that they just get what they want and be passive most of the time.
Another meaning of prosumer is the combination of the words “professional” and “consumer”. With customization focused on leisure pursuits, Toffler's initial combination has been largely supplanted by a second pair of blurring roles: that of the professional and consumer. In particular, hobbyists have become ever-more demanding in the pursuits of their hobbies, often rising above the level of dilettante (an amateur, someone who dabbles in a field out of casual interest rather than as a profession or serious interest) to the point of commanding skills equal to that of professionals. Some examples of this are in home improvement, cooking, photography, and the likes. Because of this, companies who are selling those specific products, for instance, a camera, sought to improve their camera and other devices for more sophistication and customization. Hobbies like scuba diving, sky diving, and even hardcore hiking in the woods and forests are being made the references to make cameras more durable and usable in most drastic and dangerous conditions.
Another one is the “producer and “consumer” combination. Some economics expert say that in the upcoming years, producers will become consumers, and vice versa. This will create a mass customization that is the mass production of customized and standardized products and services.
Another definition of prosumer is the “Progressive Consumer”, and identifies a modern consumer who has changed their approach to the traditional methods and habits of purchasing products. A Prosumer is researching a products value, performance, and price through social networks (twitter, tumblr, facebook) and consumer product reviews (such as Amazon.com), and prices comparison shopping engines such as Nextag.com and Thefind.com, before making a final decision or purchase. Within these web sites a Prosumer researches all aspects of a products performance, price and social acceptance in relative comparison to similar products within the same category. The Prosumer is searching for the highest quality product that best meets their personal needs for the maximum amount of money they are willing to spend. Based on that search criteria, the Prosumer is also willing to venture into new shopping distribution channels in order to purchase that product.
Actually, there have been many debates and disputes regarding the advent of the “prosumers”, but one thing remains in common: people become more assertive and even aggressive into pushing through the things that they want to have or what they want to happen.
This word prosumer is not really a new word, because most big companies and experts are using this terminology, because they have generated this terminology from their study and analysis of the market and commercial movement of today, of course, to compensate to the ever competitive market of today, Eventually, it’s a word that will become the norm in the coming years.
Because of this occurrence, the advent of death of the consumers came. As we can notice now, every store and businesses now are “customized”, not on their own liking and discretion, but they are being dictated by the customers liking and wants. Before they produce and offer their products and services, they must first know their target customers and then first know what they want and what they need, so that their business will improve and progress.
As we can notice today, business and companies tend to delve on concentrating on improving their products to meet customer, or prosumer, rather, demands.
Examples of this are as follows:
McDonald’s offer web ordering services to their internet-inclined customers. Aside from their traditional products and services, they also offer custom making of burger and other food products from their franchise. This means that customers can design their own burger and others according to their own liking. They can put and stuff ingredients that they want to be in their burger. And, voila! There you have it, your very own McBurger ala You.
Another aspect of this is the rise of businesses and companies that have been producing products and services that are concentrating in personal use or professional use. Home improvement business, as illustrated by the rise of hardware stores such as Home Depot, have been quite rampant these days. Their aim is to give pleasure and maximum satisfaction for home owners and interior designers to give elegance and beauty to their homes. Most of their products are home and people-friendly in which customers can enjoy. They also conduct research and analysis on home owners by giving surveys and other tools to catch and analyze their customer’s needs and wants. From those, they can produce products that will fit customer satisfaction.
Also, cooking enthusiasts as illustrated by creation of entirely new cable television channels entirely dedicated to the culinary arts such as The Food Channel or Food Network.
Another one is photography as illustrated by still cameras and camcorders that, often, are on a par with equipment used by professionals, as mentioned earlier in the earlier paragraphs.
Also, Do It Yourself products have been popular these days. Some of these products are computer-assemble set, in which you choose the parts and devices yourself to create a whole set of computer (of course, one must consider compatibility issues). Table sets and other machines also has this feature. It gives convenience to most customers plus they can choose their own design and assemble it as they want and according to their discretion.

According to experts, there are many characteristics of the Prosumer Market, This includes:

We can say that throughout the past decades, the world and the way we live have truly changed drastically. This is because man is a greedy being, he is not satisfied as to whatever he has or is experiencing. What’s best for him in the past is not the best for him in the present. So, in this ever changing world, people strive for high ideals and new improvements, so as to meet his or her demands in this world.
As a final note, it is evident that the world now is changing at a higher speed than ever before. We will never know, maybe in the past months, or tomorrow, or for the next years, or even at this time of writing a new breed of prosumers emerged.
