The real world corrupts. It's not necessarily a bad place, but it's a rough place. Some of your best years really will be in grade school and college, because the burden of responsibility isn't suddenly thrust upon you. Being accountable for your actions isn't the rough part of life, really. Setting goals and reaching them is the easy part. It's the added drama that drags you down. Life here is self-perpetuating, to the point where all you're concerned with is your income, or what your next bill will be, or how lonely you are, or what scary people exist out there, or how crazy your family is, or how you'll be perceived because of whatever status symbols you don't have.
Resist. Be serious about getting things done, but don't take yourself seriously. Think calmly and logically about things. Cover all your bases. Have an imagination, and use it. Daydream. Let the wind fly in your face. Stand up and be counted, don't fall in with the mainstream. Laugh, for God's sake, laugh. Look at the bigger picture. Realize you're not as important as society wants you to think, but you're important because you're here. You exist. You think. You breathe. You eat. You sing. You cry. You love. You have free will. You live.
Get out there and live, because you can, you will, and you should.
