masterlist: (it's in there somewhere) character list: Hyukjae stares at the grand building with large, surprised eyes as countless humans flock past and around him. He doesn’t understand what is going on. Sungmin had led him here and told him to wait quietly as he went to do whatever so here he is, standing and starting and being stared at. It’s not the first time, he doesn’t mind.
He’s about to start thinking that he’s been abandoned when he sees a bright pink shirt amongst the crowd and as strange as it seems, he can’t help but want to shriek in relief. But who shrieks in joy? So he refrains from doing so and shifts his center of gravity to his right side, left hand casually finding its way into his pants pocket. Sungmin approaches him with a smile that makes his eyes disappear and Hyukjae smiles out of courtesy. After all, he still doesn’t want to be here.
…Wherever here is.
“All finished?” He questions when the elder stops feet before him and looks at him as if he’s waiting for Hyukjae to do something when he was the one who was dragged here. Sungmin’s hair flies as he shakes his head but he pauses for a second afterwards left eye squinting at nothing. Hyukjae figures it’s a nervous habit. It isn’t until he notices that the other’s eye color looks slightly different does he feel thin, bony fingers wrap around his wrist and tug him into the mass assembly. “Where are we going?”
“I’m hungry. So I thought we’d get something to eat, you know.” Sungmin glances over his shoulder for a brief second before focusing back on the destination in question. Hyukjae doesn’t like it. He feels manipulated and trapped and confused and everything that screams this is a bad idea. It’s almost the same feeling he got the day before the End but this isn’t an apocalyptic warning; it’s slightly lower on the danger scale, a nuisance. And he doesn’t even know what it is.
“I still don’t know where we’re going. Can’t we just eat at a place with a little less… people?” A slick tongue darts out to wet drying lips before slithering back into his mouth and Hyukjae sighs, the moisture lessening slightly.
“You make it sound as if you’ve never been on a college campus.”
That’s because I haven’t.

“KIM KIBUM IF YOU DO NOT GIVE ME BACK MY SANDWICH THIS INSTANT I WILL SIC KYUHYUN ON YOU!” The second youngest out the trio raises an eyebrow, scoffs and takes another sip of his soy milk. Donghae is pointing at him from where he stands, towering over him like an idiot and gaining everyone’s attention. Kyuhyun’s across the room getting his food but he hears the yell from the eldest and he rolls his eyes.
“What makes you think that I took your stupid sandwich?” Kibum asks, still gazing at Donghae with a blank stare that the latter would often say is a mocking look. “If I remember correctly, you bought a ham and cheese sandwich. I’m a vegetarian, Donghae.” He explains for the umpteenth time since Kibum stopped eating meat in their second year of high school.
“I know you took it. You think that I won’t think that you took it because I know you’re a vegetarian but you thought wrong my friend. WRONG! Give. Me. My. Sandwich.” Donghae narrows his eyes in a glare and doesn’t look away from Kibum until Kyuhyun shuffles back with bad posture and a bag of plain chips and some kind of fruity soda. “Kyuhyunnie,” He looks at the youngest with big, glistening eyes and Kyuhyun can’t help another eye roll. “Kibum won’t give me back my sandwich. He’s trying to make me starve. You should beat him up for me.”
Another scoff from across the table. “As if I’ll be intimidated by scrawny nerd boy.” Kibum smirks, picking about at his salad.
“I resent that.” Kyuhyun deadpans, popping the tab on the condensation covered can before taking a swig.
Kibum sticks out his tongue at Donghae in jest and the latter pouts in disappointment over his terrible choice of friends and lack of ham sandwich.
“So if you don’t have it, then where the hell is my sandwich?”
“Why would someone leave a perfectly wrapped sandwich sitting on this table all alone?” Donghae hears someone behind him wonder aloud and Kibum chuckles. He turns around to see a guy, looks to be about his age with wild dark brown hair that looks like he just woke up and left that morning without styling his hair, a somewhat petite, slender frame for a male, and inquisitive chocolate orbs. Donghae is all kinds of mesmerized until he remembers that it’s his sandwich that the stranger is talking about.
He laughs awkwardly and scratches the back of his neck. “That, would be mine.” He says, raising his hand and waving the stranger over. The person calmly glides over and when Donghae can see his face better it turns out that his sandwich savior has a pretty face. A nice strong and beautifully crafted jaw line, slightly defined but not too protruding cheekbones, sparkling deep brown eyes and a clear pale complexion. Very pretty indeed. …So why is it that Donghae has never seen him before around here? And Donghae knows everyone.
“This is yours?” The stranger asks and Donghae smiles sheepishly, hand reaching out to reclaim his sandwich and when tan skin meets pale he feels heat and electricity run up the length of his arm and the feeling settles in his heart. Truthfully, it’s frightening. But something inside Donghae awakens and that’s even more frightening. “I was about to take it. You shouldn’t leave food around. There are people starving somewhere.” The stranger says with a small smile that makes Donghae chuckle nervously.
The stranger begins to turn to walk away and before his mind can catch up with his body his hand is darting out and then he feels wrist and bone and warm skin in his grip.
“Yes?”
He reached out without thinking and now he has no idea what to say, no idea how to explain his strange actions, and no idea why he doesn’t want this person to leave just yet. He thinks he knows this stranger but he is sure that he’s never seen his face before. There is no way he would forget someone as stunning as this person. “T-Thanks.” He blurts out smoothly and the stranger laughs but Donghae can tell it’s strangled and he wants to fix that. Wants to know what this person’s real laugh sounds like.
“You’re welcome … um …”
“Donghae. Lee Donghae. “
The stranger smiles again, a lot less forced and Donghae stops breathing at its awkward beauty. He never favored those whose gums showed when they smiled but he could make an exception for this person.
“Oh, you’re welcome Donghae. I’m … Lee Hyukjae. “
Donghae nods, etching the name into his memory and his hold lessens. The beautiful stranger - Hyukjae, he remembers - gives a slight bow and gracefully makes his exit. The fishy boy has every intention of watching him leave until he hears the sniggers of his friends.
“Way to turn on the charm, Donghae.” Kibum and Kyuhyun mock together before erupting into psychotic laughter.

Hyukjae rubs at his arm, brows furrowed and scowl set permanently as he searches for Sungmin in the vast cafeteria. He can’t shake the lingering burning feeling from where that human touched him and it’s bothering him. He knows what this feeling is, has heard countless stories about it back on his home planet but he never imagined that this would be it. Never imagined that it would happen in his lifetime. And he definitely never imagined that it he would find it on Earth.

“Since you said you come from a place where there is no college, why don’t you let me help you enroll? I’m, in a way, wealthy. I’m sure I can cover your tuition and mine.” Sungmin asks, stirring a pot of vegetable soup for dinner as Hyukjae sits on the counter.
“Don’t you have to take tests to get into colleges?”
Sungmin nods.
“What if I don’t make it?”
…
“Well, I’ll take care of that personally if it happens okay? No worries.”
Hyukjae purses his lips before nodding curtly, legs swinging to and fro like pendulums. He’s only been here for two days but he feels more comfortable, less like a complete outside, and the feeling of dread and certain death has escaped him. He wonders what the cause is but his mind can only come up with the solution that it was that sandwich boy back at Sungmin’s college. The one with the boyish face and the intelligence of a fly. The one who made Hyukjae come up with a false last name and made him feel more human than he wants to be.
He sighs heavily but Sungmin doesn’t notice, too busy humming to some song that Hyukjae can’t possibly know and he lifts up his arm to inspect his wrist. There are no major anomalies but the faint, lingering burn disturbs him to no end. He flicks his gaze over to Sungmin who’s still preoccupied with his cooking and Hyukjae flees without any problems. As he travels into the living room and over to the flight of stairs which he begins to climb, he stares hard at his left arm, allowing himself to partially change into his royal form - his hair remains the same color as does his skin tone - to check the shape of his markings. The slick, almost glittery black line that had been between his middle and ring fingers has now shifted to the left, circling his ring finger. He would have never been certain if he didn’t check, but now he’s afraid of what’ll happen next.
A wet tongue slides over his plump bottom lip and he leans against the wall, watching as the black marks tainting his torso fade away.
Sungmin definitely can’t try to enroll him in college now.
Not with ham sandwich boy there.

A/N- THEY MET OVER A HAM SANDWICH. ^^ So this is pretty short...and late. I'm sorry though. The next chapter'll be better. I'm a little meh about it but I finally got a break from school so perhaps I'll relocate my inspiration for the next one.
