That Belize in-joke aside, the finale was oddly touching, I didn't expect that.
Jimmy got his trumpet back and I loved how during the montage about Jimmy's and Marco's last scam week together in Cicero (or Slippin' Jimmy 's greatest hits!) we actualy heard jazz! Also, the Kevin Costner thing made me laugh. I had completely forgotten about it. But really there's something, even though Bob Odenkirk's eyes aren't as green as Costner's.
More than ever Jimmy reminded me of Jesse. Marco and Jimmy were just addicted to their scam, just like Jesse was a junkie. But at least they were true pals, not alone. Even Marco's death kinda recalled Jane's...
Jimmy's fate is written, like Oedipus' tragic story was. This is a Greek tragedy, and the tv gods just play around with this character, but part of me wanted Jimmy to resist the Marco's lure, even though Marco gave him more love and made him feel more worthy than Chuck ever did. Part of me wanted Jimmy to follow the path Kim was showing him, if only because I love Jimmy and Kim together.
BTW kuddos to Howard for acknowledging Jimmy's daily dedication to his brother, and pushing for Jimmy's job too.
But Saul Goodman had to come. Jimmy already inherited the ring Saul was wearing on BrBa! There was no escape. Of course Jimmy doesn't know it and he thinks he's going to be free, to choose his path on his own terms. Not Slippin' Jimmy the con man anymore, but not the respectable lawyer he once tried to become either.
His riding his car in the end, after leaving the parking lot and telling Mike that he won't let it stop him ever again, humming "Smoke on the water", also called to the mind Jesse Pinkman's final ride. The difference being that we know to where Jimmy McGill is actually heading.
I will definitely watch season 2. And I will have an icon!
ETA:
Here is an interview with director/writer of the finale, Peter Gould, that pleased me a lot!
"The other thing that really surprised us was how much we liked Jimmy McGill. We root for this character in a way that I was never expecting. I was expecting Saul Goodman to be full of mischief and full of energy and fun, but I wasn't expecting to root for him and feel for him the way I feel for Jimmy. It's put us in an interesting place, because we've gotten to the point where we love Jimmy McGill. We like Saul Goodman, but we love Jimmy McGill. "
