I couldn't watch the opening scene. It had me peeking through my fingers. It was too horrible. Man, I wanted so badly for that guy to get away. That was some Human Centipede style grotesque disturbing horror. And on network TV *shakes head*.

I do think Will's playing with fire. I get that Will needs to manipulate Hannibal in order to find proof of Hannibal framing him. But if Will gets caught out faking emotional distress to manipulate people it's only going to make him seem more guilty.

He's playing with fire but he's fighting for his life. Crawford's boss was clear about it, everybody already thinks he is guilty and he pleads guilty it's death penalty, and she believes he is a psychopath and has always been a killer.

I agree that faking emotional distress makes him look more like a psychopath than like a delusional man (to use Jack's categories), but for Will it isn't about one or another, he wants to destroy the narrative Hannibal has built about him, and recreate what did happen...In his eyes, he has to play fire against fire.

The opening scene was gruesome, but it had me rooting for the man.

I like the show much better this season than last. But it is perhaps too dark for network TV. That said, I don't see how it could survive on Cable either. It's just a little too much involved and to much the psychological thriller for quite a few people.

I like the idea that Will found the sty in the eye. That the last body did not fit the pattern. And in his mind looking up to see the stag wendigo.

I don't know, True Detective is even darker in a way, and it's all about psychology and very little action. And Breaking Bad was considered too dark and too demanding back in the days, before it became THE show everybody had to see (basically before season 5)...Hannibal is still quite accessible compared to shows like OZ or Deadwood!

It was kinda obvious that the last body didn't fit the pattern, or rather the pallette, and Katz and the others should have been able to say it.
That said, I liked the idea of the killer in the eye -- echoing the legend of killers having their picture kinda printed on the retina of their victims for their face is the last thing the victims saw --, since it recalled the habit Flemish painters (or Piero della Francesca since Lecter mentioned him) had to put a picture of themselves (sometimes hidden like in Van Eyck's paintings) in the canvas.

And, in a way, through Will's mind, Hannibal, the ultimate artist here, left an image of himself too, as the stag wendigo.

GREAT recap and thoughts.

I don't read too much meta, never reviews and never ever listen to writers and directors talk about their process....I find it distracts from my own interpretations. But if they are talking Lucifer then I believe it because the show is definitely moving in that direction this season. 2.2 was so biblical in symbology and proportion. Lecter/Lucifer wants to be in the light and wants to corrupt. It's hugely grotesque and extremely satisfying as a storyline. Heh.

I'm totally bummed about the ratings. I have struggled to turn folks onto this show. It just is not working for them and that blows my mind. It is the highest quality show I've ever seen on tv and surpasses most film as well. I'm not certain why folks are avoiding it. I am hearing alot from people who haven't even tried it but believe it to be a cheap imitation of Hopkin's magnum opus.

I want to write more about this season but am just slammed for time lately. I loved reading your thoughts.

AND FANTASTIC WORK ON THE ILLUSTRATIONS.

Yes I guess that some people are just turn off by the serial killer angle and others expect the show to be the poor man's Hannibal compared to the movies, while it's actually better than the movies and also quite different in terms of atmosphere (not really a thriller), and thanks to its unique visual signature. *sigh*

I wouldn't say it's the highest quality show I've ever seen and to be honest I wouldn't put it in my tv pantheon (but I'm very demanding and I wouldn't put The Sopranos in it either!), but it's still a very good series and I'm glad that you have found YOUR show.
