Once More With Thinking

I guess that, despite my long entry on "Know Thy Enemy" of yesterday I wasn't done with Caprica thoughts yet.

I keep thinking of family stuff and nemesises...

In "Reign of a Waterfall", after Amanda made her confession at the Memorial, Daniel told his wife that she should have thought about the consequences...but he obviously didn't think about the consequences himself when he asked Joseph to use his connections to the Ha'la'tha  to have the mcp stolen from Vergis. He wanted the mcp so he found a way to get it.

He must have known, deep down, that some dirty job, bloody job even, had to be done to steal it, but he didn't think of it afterwards, didn't want to. In" Know Thy Enemy", Daniel has to face the consequences of his talking Joseph into stealing the mcp. Now he can't help thinking of the murders, even picturing himself with tattoed arms and bloody hands in his nightmares while he wasn't there. No matter what he told Vergis, he does feel responsible. Daniel is learning that there are consequences to his own actions too. And this is only the beginning. I can't wait for him to find out about Zoe's avatar being stuck in the U-87!

Living with the consequences, living with the knowledge of past faults and mistakes was a big theme on BSG and Caprica is carrying it on.

Also, I see a parallel between Clarice calling Barnabus an "enforcer" and the role that Sam has played so far, for the Guatrau or for his brother...something that might define the Cylons later. They will be working slaves for sure, but the defense contract was the beginning of everything, so basically Cylons are meant to be enforcers. Enforcers obey...which reminds me of what Sam told Joseph in the pilot: you don't ask the Guatrau some time to think you say "yes sir"!

Enforcers are useful, but some day they may rebel and take the power in their own hands.

One last thing. Daniel said he hated television, and he wasn't very good on Sarno's at first, he was clearly uncomfortable, ill at ease. Tomas Vergis, on the other hand, looked like he was at home. He knows how to play with the media. He is a natural show man. He is living the Caprican dream (James Marsters, in an interview, stated that Caprica was America, and there's definitely a reflection of American culture on the show s so I'm using the American dream analogy here), just like Michael Corleone in Godfather! He may refer to Tauron ways that sound traditional ("Blood for blood" and all) but he is a new man.

Despite being a successful business man and a computer genius, inventor of the holoband and maker of the U-87, inn spite of his speech to the Graystone Industry board, Daniel might be more old-fashioned. Will he be able to update himself?

Graystone are the same and not the same at once. There's an interesting dialectics going there.  For instance, Vergis showed his tattoes and talked about a "family" that sounds mafia-like (his godschildren!), a big family with many members (like he Willow family minus the sex!) but it's Daniel who appeared on Sarno as a family man, who is a daddy and a husband.
And what did Zoe say in the pilot? That a "new family" would welcome them on Gemenon!

I love how the show is questioning/exploring the concept of family and its dynamics through the Graystones, the Adamas, the group marriage, the Tauron mob, and the monotheist sect known as STO !
