Well, I've now been to Italy enough times and have stayed here enough time to realize that, despite how much I am love with this country, there are two things I am having a hard time adapting to: Time and fish.
Italians seem to have this concept of endless time, which is totally opposite to everything in Germany or the United States. Oh, the train is late one hour? Who cares? Oh, I said I would call you at 9 and now it's 12? What's the big deal? Oh, we have to eat quickly since we have a busy day, but three hours later we are still at the table slowly sipping on some coffee? Stop being so American and enjoy yourself! I admit it can be nice sometimes to just not worry about time, but it's also a little frustrating for me at times.
The second problem: fish. Don't get me wrong, Italy is home to some of the best fish I have ever tasted in my life. But sometimes, Eugenio's mom cooks things I don't even want at the same table as me, let alone in my stomach. I don't want to eat octopus or squid or jelly fish... just no... so when she decides to give me a normal looking fish that I can eat, what does she do? She plops the damn fish head on my plate! Like I'm supposed to eat a fish with all the bones still in the body while it's empty eye sockets are staring at me! Ok, I thought... I'll just flip it over so it's not looking at me, pick out the bones, and leave the head... so I flip it over... and it's still got it's skin on.
The end.
