iPod World

They say that when as person leaves there body to travel, their spiritual self and their physical self are connected by a silver thread. I had a dream where I was watching people journey through the astral plain, and I could see the thread that tethered one to the other. However, on closer inspection, I realized that the threads were iPod head phones.

I’m really not sure what to make of it.

My own iPod shuffle treated me to a nice selection of 80’s music this morning. A few Pet Shop Boys songs, Talk Talk, Natural Selection, Tears for Fears, and some Monkeys thrown in there for good measure. Almost too much to be random.

I had this dream long before I had my own iPod, but the memory came back to me as I almost missed my stop on the subway this morning. Even advertisers of these extremely portable music devices are selling them tiny little worlds that you can escape into from time to time. Or all of the time.

What are these portable iWorlds doing to us? Until today I’ve been careful to take both of my ear buds out when interacting with people, but I didn’t really NEED to in order to buy that pop at the corner store. Did I? No verbal communication was required.

Are we going to start paying more attention to physical cues? Others subtle physical actions and responses, instead of just what others are saying. Could this help us see the world around us in a whole new way?

Or are we striding boldly towards a society where we retreat farther and farther into our own mind and the worlds we create for ourselves? A world we’d rather live in besides this one.

Hrmmm…
