My computer died today. And I mean REALLY FRIED. Go not pass go, do not collect $200.
I was browsing and suddenly everything stopped. I did a hard boot and NOTHING happened. With the help of friend Dan we took it into a place over in Dartmouth called JPJ to find out what might be the problem.
It was very quickly apparent that my motherboard was toast. Between the three employees in the shop we determined three possibilities as to what may have occurred, coincidentally each one having to do with a different upgrade I recently purchased for my system.
ONE: The RAM I purchased was apparently not of particularly high quality and may have been causing some problems. Maybe not so good, but unlikely to cause a system melt down of this magnitude.
TWO: The Video card I installed simply could not be run properly with the power supply I had. Again not great, but the problems described by the employee had not yet begun to show (though I have no doubt they would soon enough have done so).
THREE: And this is the one that most likely did it. MY NEW HEADSET OVERLOADED THE MOTHERBOARD. Why??? The motherboard could not support anything plugged into the front USB ports that it needed power!?! Once something that would cause this problem was plugged in, it would take about 1-2 weeks to go. Bingo.
It was once this guy’s job at another store, to deal with returns of computer parts, so he knew all about “problem products”. On his closer inspection he exclaimed “Oh, it’s one of Those motherboards!”
At one point the company was replacing the motherboard with new ones if they were destroyed like mine was due to their inability to run anything that needed power through the front USB ports, but nothing like my board really exists any more. I’m honestly surprised that nothing like this happened earlier, but thinking about I’ve never really used the ports for anything that needed to draw power from the board for as long as I have had the computer. It wasn't till after he discribed the probelm with the boards that I was able to put two and two together.
SO! I am now on the hunt for a new computer. It looks like some pretty kick ass components have come out very recently, for some very reasonable prices. I’ll let you know how things go.
