I cringe when people say, "this world owes you nothing." At first glance, you may think such people are promoting gratitude and humbling spoiled brats.
But I object to the notion "this world owes you nothing", because our natural rights suggest otherwise. Rights, by their very nature, belong to everyone, and hence are "owed" to all.
After all, the Declaration of Independence states, "Endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights...." I don't need to define "inalienable" for you to realize this means no one should take away these rights, hence we are owed these rights.
The world may not owe us luxuries or even a living, but the world does owe us "certain inalienable rights", because our Creator made the universe this way. So when you say, "this world owes you nothing," you may be blaspheming our Creator.
This world does owe us something: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
