I really enjoyed it actually! I was surprised at how many changes they made from the book though, for some reason I had it in my head that it was going to be a pretty close retelling of it. One thing that stood out to me was I remember (although disclaimer that it has been a few years since I read it now!)
Gary being around to sow discord for a LOT longer in the book, and I think that really helped with building up the tension. I can still remember the creepiness of the reveal that, after they voted to kick him out, turns out he stayed hidden downstairs in the basement all along! The film in comparison deals with him turning on them all pretty quickly, even the moment of the monsters being let in to the house seemed a lot scarier in the book somehow, Olympia's death especially did not really live up to how I pictured it in my head.
Also I’m not sure about the films choice to keep Tom alive after that night, to me it makes more sense that Malorie became as tough and hardened as she did because she was the sole survivor with the two babies to take care of, I’m not sure that their early upbringing would have turned out the same at all if Tom had been around as a gentler influence on Malorie?
And of course the final big change was that in the book Malorie is freaked out to realise that the new community she finds had been deliberately blinding people in the beginning. I guess I can understand why they wanted to go for a simpler happy ending for the film version, but still people blinding themselves in this world does make a lot of sense? It seemed a bit odd not to deal with that part of it at all
After all my nitpicking on the changes to the book though, I definitely did really enjoy it! Sandra was especially great in it. Gave it four stars on letterboxed
And it’s just been confirmed today that The Punisher and Jessica Jones are both cancelled, with Netflix not even having the decency to wait for JJ’s third season to even air first 😡 This
open letter from Jeph Loeb seems somewhat hopeful though that Disney might be having discussions to continue them on another platform? It seems like a no-brainer if they want goodwill and a big launch for expanding Hulu internationally
