The beginning with Elena turning out to be Katherine really freaked me out!!! Also I love episodes that showcase Stefan's darker side and struggle not to lose control, so I loved that whole interrogation with Katherine confronting Stefan over keeping her picture and still being in love with her/and Stefan wanting the truth of their past. Even though I was a little frustrated with all of his protectiveness over keeping Elena safe from Katherine, yet he couldn't take the opportunity to kill Katherine. And Katherine also wasn't flinching, and knew there was no way he would kill her. Frustrating, but it does fit with his previous refusal to kill Damon when Damon was causing chaos in the town, and suggests his feelings for Katherine are stronger than he can admit to himself.
I like Stefan/Elena, but all of their hugs and sweet moments are starting to feel a bit samey, so I would not be amiss to some Stefan/Katherine action for sweeps :P The moment before Stefan stabbed her with the vervaine was seriously hot. I'm not sure the show has done a very good job of selling exactly why Katherine fell for Stefan in the first place though. I'm more interested in present-day Stefan and Katherine who do have an interesting dynamic, but I'm not convinced by the flashbacks of why Katherine would fall so hard for human Stefan. It seemed to mostly be about him saying that he loved her, but then we know that both brothers were besotted with her, so it was hardly a new experience for Katherine to have someone confessing love for her. Damon was arguably way more blinded by love as he was willingly trapping victims for her, whereas Stefen did reject that major part of her and have to be compelled into forgetting. I'm just not sure what stood out for her with Stefan, other than him calling her an angel and being the more romantic of the two.
Katherine's complete lack of feelings for Damon were confusing, why didn't she just concentrate on Stefan if he was the one she was in love with? Perhaps the original idea was to have fun with both brothers and she didn't expect to fall for Stefan, but it still seems a little odd that she even bothered with plans to keep both brothers around as vampires if she regarded Damon as little more than a nuisance
The scenes at the barbecue were frequently hilarious with all of the dog jokes and "I heard great things about you, Damon. "Really? that's a surprise. Because I'm a dick" hee! It was nice to see the adults hanging out for once, drunk Aunt Jenna is always kinda funny. And for the first time I found Mason interesting, his responses to Damon's needling were pretty funny, "I bet I'm not half the ladykiller you are", and he had good chemistry with Jenna too.
I was confused about where Jeremy was. He is supposed to live in the house where the barbecue was happening, plus I was expecting him to be there for his new bonding moments with Damon if nothing else, but then there as no sign of Matt or Bonnie either so clearly this show doesn't worry about including all of the cast in every episode.
And I do hope we get some good scenes between Damon and Stefan soon, season 1 was always good for giving them at least one great moment together every episode, and I think that's been a bit missing so far this season.
And how bad-ass does next weeks trailer look!!!!

And Nikita I'm still enjoying, but LOL at Michael's attempts to hit the bag when he had zero power behind his punch. It reminded me of the Buffy/Giles scene from Once More With Feeling with SMG punching the bag. Not too convincing!
