Grr I'm starting to find the TWoP forums really aggravating for The Vampire Diaries. How are you supposed to have a civil discussion when every few pages makes some condescending comment about Damon being hot. Isn't getting boards on boards, and talking about the fans, supposed to be against the rules ( Read more... )

TWoP gets annoying after a while no matter what the show. That's why I just go there when I feel like reading some discussion. I used to be a regular on the SV boards, but I really can't read page after page of the same damn discussion in every thread. People need to state their opinions and move on, or find better ways to defend their opinions. Saying the same thing over and over again does not an argument make.

I'm curious, though... what do you mean by "condescending comment about Damon being hot"? Are we talking pro-Damon comments here, or anti-Damon?

There are some posters that seem to keep making sarky comments all of the time about Damon being excused anything because he's hot and funny, or so romantic, even when I've heard nothing of the sort at TWoP. Someone even asked are those arguments you are reading elsewhere. Like in the episode thread someone might have a post wondering if Damon killed Jeremy to try and make Elena hate him, and wanting to discuss what were the motives behind the act. Then suddenly you get a huge rant about Damon just being a prick, why are people always trying to justify him (wanting to understand his motives = justify now?), and him killing Jeremy to hurt Elena is not romantic. Wtf, no one said that it was

Someone responded to me yesterday with "I'm afraid Damon could kill the entire town and you would still find excuses for him because he's "hot" when I had zero in my post about justifying Damon (or finding him hot LOL), and was talking in terms of wanting Bonnie's POV to be clearer. Some posters seem to bring their seething hatred of Damon into ( ... )

It's according to the the Mod is. TWOP has the most insane modding of any board, which given how nutty and biased modding is in general, isn't a small statement.

I'm wondering if the mods are just too lazy to follow the threads cause seriously it's pretty ridiculous how board on board it gets at times.

I swear some posters seem to resent even watching a vampire show to start with, and can in no way get behind the characters because all they can do is focus on them in a real-world context. My heart broke for Elena in the scene where Damon kills Jeremy, it was un unspeakably shitty thing to do. But I watch that scene in terms of whoa Damon seriously went over the line there/hit rock bottom, I'm interested in where the show takes him next, not in a real real world context of I would never again respect Elena if she was friendly with someone who murdered her brother. We're talking about a vampire show, one in which even Stefan (and disclaimer that I love Stefan) has an extreme dark side and shady past if we're looking at it all from a real world perspective of how these characters are supposed to react to things

Why even watch if you have that strong a reaction to the very premise of the show

I figure it's going to take a while for Damon to dig himself out of that hole -- and it should. First, there's no sense rushing things for the show. Second, because it shouldn't be handled lightly. Damon has some growing up to do (because being casually homocidal is a problem) to merit trust. I'll be interested in how the show handles these things. Damon has got story to tell.

:nods: I can't understand why people aren't happy to go along for the ride, instead of spending most of their posts complaining about how they think a triangle will ruin the show, how they think the show can never believably redeem Damon. Why not wait to see how they actually do these things before preemptively judging things that haven't even happened yet

Yeah, TWoP always ends up rolling around in the gutter of uncivil conversation. Show after show; it happens again and again. The environment seems to make it inevitable.

I only wish I could find somewhere else to have a decent discussion. I enjoy reading the entires on my flist reviewing the show, but these days on LJ people reviewing tv shows never seem to get all that many comments, so real discussion and debate never gets started

There is a general comm for TVD, but it seems to be more about posting fanart and picspam

Yeah. I've noticed that, too. Not as much discussion around shows as there used to be.

Especially with the newer fandoms. I still see a fair amount of discussion with older shows like Supernatural, but the comm's being set up for newer shows seem pretty dead when it comes to discussion. Even when it's obvious a large fanbase is out there as I still see the fanart being produced

Just to imply that we're silly little girls who let Damon's hotness overwhelm our common sense I guess. I saw similar attitudes when I was a Spike fan, and it was suggested that every argument made was somehow related to being blinded by the characters abs
