Character
Name: Toushiro Hitsugaya
Series: Bleach
Timeline: Chapter 376 + his Route memories
Canon Resource Links: Bleach Wikia

Affiliation: Trainer

Personality: At first glance, Hitsugaya is emotionally distant, maintaining a cold and aloof personality no matter the situation he finds himself in. He is mature and intelligent beyond what his young appearance would imply, and through his rather distinctive work ethic in a position that is earned, not bought or passed down through family lines, he's earned the loyalty and respect of his subordinates and some of his peers. Also helping to inspire this loyalty is his ability to mostly keep a cool head during a crisis, and very little seems to actually ruffle his feathers in any obvious manner. The fact that he doesn't let his position as a Captain go to his head and inflate his ego also helps matters a good deal.

But in spite of his serious, mature, and seemingly unruffelable personality, Toushiro does have quite the temper and can be easily annoyed if his buttons are pushed in the right way. Quips about his height or his young age are one of the simplest ways to annoy him, as is calling him by anything other than his title being that he hates nicknames or his surname, or simply not doing work on time as is easy to see in his trusting, if not headache-producing, relationship with his lieutenant. There is one exception to the nickname "issue", however; his adopted sister, Momo Hinamori. In spite of how she consistently refuses to call him by his title, he is obviously quite fond of her and simply teases her in return, calling her by an embarrassing nickname if she ever needs to be cheered up. He is also incredibly protective of her, up to the point of being willing to give up his hard-earned position to see her avenged after her Captain left both of them for dead.

However, despite his more caring attitude towards Momo, the emotional distance remains and tends to rear its head in the way that he acts, often choosing to handle things alone instead of trusting his subordinates to help him when he needs it. It's easy to assume, and perhaps rightly so, that Toushiro has trust issues because he doesn't want to be hurt again like he was as a child, and thus it speaks volumes that he trusts his Lieutenant, Rangiku Matsumoto, with his back despite the fact that this is how a normal Captain/Lieutenant relationship is supposed to be.

Strengths/Weaknesses

Due to his strong abilities and intelligence beyond his years, Toushiro has been called a child prodigy many times and this shows in how quickly he rose through the ranks and became a Captain, along with his rather lengthy list of battles won despite the odds being against him. He is also a rather competent leader, able to keep an entire division running at least relatively smoothly while his entire world was in shambles from the defection of three Captains, along with keeping a squad of the loudest and laziest Soul Reapers on task during wartime no matter how much they got on his nerves nor how many times they drove him up the proverbial wall.

However, in spite of all his natural talent and intelligence, Toushiro is still a child by Soul Society standards. Compared to other Captains, he's inexperienced in battle and will sometimes charge in at the first sign of an opening rather than waiting until it's safer to strike. He also has the tendency to let his temper get the best of him, particularly when Momo is involved, and this makes him get reckless to the point where he doesn't so much as give a spare thought to anything other than attacking who ever has been unlucky enough to make him mad. He is also, as mentioned earlier, emotionally withdrawn from all but a select few, and this has led to trouble before.

On the topic of fears, we aren't shown him ever being truly afraid. Even when he is losing battles, Toushiro doesn't show much in the way of fear for his life or safety no matter how injured he may be, and due to his rather good poker face, it's not easy to see if he is afraid when his comrades are injured. However, it may be right to assume that he does fear losing people he cares for, which is where his protective streak may stem from

His physical stature is also a double edged blade; due to his short height and skinny build, Toushiro is able to out-maneuver opponents more skilled than he is without much trouble and is very quick on his feet, dodging blows that would have landed others in a hospital bed easily. When he can't dodge, however, is when the trouble crops up; again due to his small stature, Toushiro isn't as good at taking hits as older Soul Reapers and more than a few fights have ended with him bleeding on the floor because of this.

Samples

First Person Sample: [The feed clicks on with just the quiet sound of the ocean lapping at the shoreline, and some deeper splashing further out. He's in Cherrygrove, and actually took a moment to rest before continuing on. ]

Has anyone's Pokémon simply refused to evolve? I had assumed that Psyduck wasn't strong enough, but he's started then just stopped midway through. I can't figure it out--

[There's a hint of curiosity in his voice as he speaks, but he's suddenly cut off by a loud "Psy!". Seems Psyduck got himself into trouble again, because Hitsugaya clicks his tongue, there's the sound of fabric falling over the Gear, then silence. About five or so minutes later, the video starts up suddenly as he pulls his haori off the Gear. Hitsugaya is dripping wet, looking rather angry, and there's a Golduck towering behind him, looking actually quite smug.]

Forget I asked. Water-types evolve when they find themselves unable to even swim through the surf.

Third Person Sample: It was actually fairly hard to lose track of time in Johto. There was no paperwork to get done, no division to keep running smoothly, and no battles to be fought with a sword or ice. There was only the sun making its slow trek across the sky to tell time with on the road, and once it went down, so did most trainers and Toushiro was no exception. But when night finally did fall, he'd often find himself unable to fall asleep, losing himself in thoughts of those few hours spent back home before he'd returned. Sure, their opponents had been dropping left and right, but Aizen had still stood.

Oh, Matsumoto had told him that they'd won, that Aizen had been defeated and sealed and he'd seen the battles continue with his own eyes, forever marching towards the future. He knew that she'd never lie to him about something like that, but he still found it hard to believe that it was really over. He still found it hard to believe that, no matter what anyone said, they could change things when they got back to their worlds. If they got back to their worlds. Sure, he'd gone back home but he'd also come back and that...didn't bode well for any permanent return home. That thought was enough to set his teeth on edge as he sat away from the fire of his and Rangiku's little camp, his attention fully on his thoughts.

So it was no surprise, really, that Rangiku was able to sneak up behind him and hug him to her ample chest like she always did. This time, however, his struggles were cut short by her voice and he had to stop to listen.

"You know, Captain, you're going to get wrinkles if you keep stressing out like this. I've got your back, so you don't have to worry about a thing."

Did she have his back? Of course she did. The more appropriate question would be when hadn't she had his bad, and when hadn't he had hers. The answer to that would be never, so all he did was huff and continue to try and pull away.

"I know that. Now will you let go?"

With a giggle, the woman did pull away to return to her meal, and Toushiro shook his head in well hidden amusement. There was still plenty of thinking he had to do on the subject of what he'd do if or when he got home, but, for tonight, he'd stop. No one wanted more than one of Rangiku's strangling hugs, not even him. Besides, there was nothing he could really do to change things here, even if he held to his old ways and remembered every single thing he learned to make Aizen pay for what he'd done, and there really was no use worrying about it. Shaking the bad feeling it left him with would take longer, but for now...

For now, he'd just worry about keeping Rangiku from burning herself with her own food. The rest would just have to wait.
