I'm still here. Just been very busy lately!
smishingtrip - hopefully will have something in the post for you by the start of next week :)
We has just been holiday nicely :)
I love love love birdwatching. I am 28.
This is a very bizarre concept for some people! But my one of my most favourite things to do in the world is wander round a nature reserve/lake/park, with a pair of ‘bins’ round my neck, camera slung over one shoulder, and bird book in bag.
I love sitting in bird hides, looking out over the view, scanning the life, sometimes focusing on one for a long time. The sense of peace it brings me (and Adam) is incredible.
I have been known to whoop in sheer delight at the aerial acrobatics of a Marsh Harrier or Lapwing. Or tremble when waiting for the very shy, elusive Bittern to pop its head out of the reed beed for literally seconds. Or coo over a baby Mallard or Coot following it’s parents, when everyone else is still waiting for said Bittern.
I like to write all the birds we have seen down in a little notebook, then when get home one of us will write up a little report for the day. This year’s holiday was to the same place as we went last year, and it was wonderful to be able to sit in the caravan and read over last year’s notes and remember.
It’s been amazing to see how far we’ve come in a year. Last year (as complete beginners) we were stopping every five minutes to flick through the bird book. This year we could reel the names off, and therefore spend more time studying them.
As we left, we booked next year’s holiday in the same place - 55% off and 2 weeks this time. It’s rapidly turning into the “annual May Norfolk holiday”
My only wish is to record better what I see. As soon as all the wedding is paid for though, I will buying me an DSLR and telephoto lens. Our honeymoon is to Scotland, and all about the birdwatching, so I'm not going without a new fancypants camera!
