Contrary to Popular Belief

People like to make assumptions. They look at other people and then guess at who they are by what they see. The girl with the glasses must be a total book nerd, and the guy who obsesses over his hair must be gay. And sometimes those assumptions are right.

When people see my best friend Artie and me, they make loads of assumptions. They see Artie, the smiling cripple who dresses like a grandpa and never seemed to be fazed by what's going on around him or to him. They assume he's at home with himself and that he is just one of those people who can find the good in every situation. They assume that he doesn't really care what people think of him. They assume he must have a supportive family, the typical middle class suburban life. They assume he's happy.

And then they see me, the quiet Goth with a penchant for black clothing who has been seen breaking down crying more than once. They assume that I must be depressed, maybe even suicidal. They assume that I'm a ticking time bomb who will one day explode and maybe take others with me. They assume I don't talk because I'm too afraid of what other people think of me, or that it's because my self-esteem is so low that I can't possibly imagine my opinion will matter. They assume my parents must abuse me, or neglect me at best, and that there is no way someone so obsessed with death could ever be a happy person.

They assume I'm the one who needs saving and that Artie is the light pulling me from the dark.

The problem is, they couldn't be any more wrong about us.
