College Search Tip

I know most of the people who read this are either currently in college or have already graduated, however if anyone is considering graduate school and doesn't know where to start with the search process, I highly recommend this website: www.collegeboard.com. It has a very detailed, extensive, personalized search engine that allows you to search all the colleges/univerities and graduate schools in the US by a number of factors including (but definitely not limited to) location, programs available, price, campus activities, resident vs. commuter school, size, and the list goes on and on! After you plug in all your preferences (which is a really fun process, reminds me of those online quizzes on Facebook and the like!), it gives you a list of schools that match your criteria in the order of how well they seem to match judging by their websites and data/statistics.

You can create a username and password for free in order to save this list and return to it to view or adjust the list and your criteria, and to receive emails from the site including advice on such things as applications and financial aid, and potentially emails from the schools on your list as well with info on dates of open houses and such. Another useful feature that comes with creating a username and then logging in to the site is a checklist of search/application steps, where you can track your progress and how it compares to the site's suggested timeline. (Note: You will need to take into consideration that this timeline is based on the average undergraduate application deadline of the 2nd week of March for fall admission, and so this would need to be adjusted if you are applying early decision, for a spring enrollment, to a college with a rolling application deadline, or are a transfer student.) Also, not so useful for independent adults but if anyone knows high-schoolers going through this process for the first time, I would recommend to them the feature option that automatically forwards the list and emails from colleges to parents.

This website has served me very well through a grand total of three college searches and seven years now. :)
