For books on interpersonal communication, may I please recommend How To Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie? Please don't be put off by the title. It is not a book about manipulating people. It is a book about being a better person.

15 documentaries is a LOT! I'd consider subscribing to Wholphin and counting it as a kick-ass magazine, too. :)

The Humane Society and Animal Friends are charities with very low expectations. A little money goes a long way for them; and dog walking might even be fun.

I don't know how far you are into True Blood, but they definitely do not consistently equate vampires to gays. There are points where the treatment of vampires is used as an allegory for various minority groups, but the symbolism is all over the place, as (realistically) the reaction to vampires is a very complex thing. (I also give them credit for introducing a number of homosexual characters with different and complex personalities.) By this point, halfway through the third season, it's hard to say whether vampires are a persecuted minority or if they are secretly running the world Illuminati-style. The show is not Great Literature by a long shot, but for cheesy entertainment it's a ton smarter than I'd ever expect it to be.

Your ambition is admirable and it is neat to see the progress you are making on your goals.
