This is random, but I just grasped the concept of 'best thing since sliced bread.' This was mainly due to the fact that I had to slice my own bread for the first time in about three years, since my mom quit making bread for herself. But, I realized how critical the bread-slicing process can really be, espeically when the rigidity of an entire peanut-butter and jelly sandwich rests on the ability of the slicer. After slicing my bread, it occured to as to why they pre-slice bread, because it's just so convenient. No getting out the bread-knife, dirtying another dish at 2 a.m. when all you want is a PB and J sandwich. And I can just think of how trying times were when bread had to be sliced manually. I can see now how one might be so amazed by the idea (in it's time, of course) that they would come up with the phrase, or plausibly say 'this is the best thing since sliced bread.'
