Canon point: Chapter 17 : Go to Kyoto. After the mission to Kyoto has been announced, but before he actually gets a chance to visit the city.
Personality: Rin is a very emotional teenager who never holds back when it comes to sharing how he's feeling at any given time. In general he's carefree and laid-back, enjoying sleeping in and spacing out. He likes to cook for others and relax by reading manga.
When it's time for action, he's the first to rush into danger, more often than not willing to act as a distraction to the enemy in order to protect others. Though he's been lectured many times for this habit, he shows no sign of stopping. He can't stand waiting around and brooding when action could be taken instead.
Similarly, if something angers him, he likes to face the problem head on. This can range from challenging bullies to arguing with those in authority. As such, he doesn't have much respect for those in positions of power unless they've earned it in his own eyes.
Rin is the type to be very curious about new situations, even if he's the first to admit that he's not the most intelligent guy and might not understand the explanation. He's rather good at adapting to change however, though he may complain and protest a lot.
When his father died, he began to accept more responsibilities in his life. Aside from learning the reason why he had always felt different as a kid, discovering his heritage was a turning point that made him realize he needed to grow up, and quickly. Though he no longer actively seeks out confrontations, he is still very willing to fight anyone who challenges him. Anyone who tries to involve innocent bystanders will definitely incur his wrath.
Since enrolling in True Cross Academy, he's made a renewed effort to make and keep friendships. He's proven multiple times that he's willing to sacrifice himself for those he cares about and has no problem with apologizing if he feels it will help to mend broken bridges. As he missed out on many such opportunities when he was younger, he's easily excited by the idea of genuinely having a good time with a group of peers.
When he learned just how much of a sacrifice his father had made while raising him, Rin became more focused on his goals. Prior to his life as an exorcist, he really had no concrete plans for his future and didn't see himself as someone who had very much to offer the world. Having met many challenges to his very existence, he has become much more confident in himself. He's clearly stated his ambition to defeat Satan to anyone who will listen and plans to follow through with it to the end.
Overall, he's still very naive about the world around him, mainly due to his powers being kept a
secret from him for so many years. He always seems to attract trouble, but never backs down when the situation calls for courage.
During his time in Pleasantville that was more or less spent in solitude, Rin has worked on controlling his emotions so that he has recognized have such a hold over him. He's also been learning the benefits of talking out possibilities and thinking through his situation. His desire to form new bonds of friendships has strengthened as he reminisced. In general, he's become a calmer person, less likely to fly-off-the-handle when provoked.
With all the time alone, Rin's spent much time improving his skills with his demonic fire. Realizing that it was his fear of himself and his heritage that caused him to lose his sanity, he's come much closer to accepting his lot in life. As such, it's very rare for him to be pulled into a state of demonic rage unless he's in a state severe peril.
Powers/Abilities: Rin's powers derive from his heritage, as he is the son of Satan and inherited his "blue flames." Near the time of his birth, the majority of these powers were sealed in a sword known as Kurikara or the Koumaken. As the flames are actually an ability from the demon world, or "Gehenna", they are accessible through the part of the blade that acts as a door to that world. When the sword is sheathed, the scabbard acts as a gateway and closes this door. Due to the demonic nature of his flames, they can only be doused with holy water. (Though there's a bit of leniency on this.)
Upon drawing it, Rin's ears elongate, his fangs grow pointer and his body becomes engulfed in a blue fire, including the tuft at the end of his tail. If Rin becomes overly emotional, he is at risk of being mentally overwhelmed by the flames. When this happens he becomes very violent and beast-like, occasionally blacking out from his sanity.
He can still access his powers when Kurikara is not drawn, but the strength is greatly reduced. He's still at the early stages of learning to control himself and will have to overcome his fears before he can hope to fully harness any of his abilities.
He also possesses far above human-level strength, which he has known about since he was a child. If he's not careful, he can cause destruction of property or injury to others.
Even the most serious of wounds is easily healed by his demon body.
Prose sample:
Another day had all but passed by. Again, it was filled with thrilling activities ranging from weather discussions to eating cucumber sandwiches with the crusts removed. There wasn't much to look forward to at night either, aside from some black and white television shows with almost bizarrely inane plots.
Rin let out a sigh as he relaxed on the porch of what had been his home for, how long now? It wasn't really easy to tell anymore. He was fairly sure his birthday was coming up, but with no real way to discern what month it was, he couldn't be positive. Did it really matter in this place anyway? As far as he could tell, this was some kind of purgatory.
It was strange though, he didn't remember dying. Had it just happened really suddenly? Maybe he'd simply lost himself again in his own mind and never fully recovered. All of his theories had problems with them of course. He still had his sword with him, he could still access his demonic state. Wouldn't something like that be out of reach if he was separated from that part of himself? And death, that'd been debated countless times. Wouldn't he have ended up in some kind of afterlife that his father has talked of? Even if not heaven, where the old man certainly was, then Gehenna, hell? Satan would hardly let him slip from his grasp so easily.
The main problem had to be the solitude. Whoever, or whatever occupied this neighbourhood besides him, they didn't count. They were some strange facimiles of people, lacking any real personality of ability to provide a rational perspective on this place. Having a meaningful conversation with anyone but himself was pretty much out of the question.
At least he'd finally managed to gain kitchen access for himself. It was difficult working with just the fixings for tea, sandwiches and the occasional ice cream sundae. Still, it would be worse to let his cooking talents fall into a state of complete disrepair. Rin considered himself to have a fairly good sense of taste, and was general pleased with what he accomplished. If only it was possible to put together a decent sukiyaki.
He glanced at his katana, stored securely in its scabbard and laying beside him so informally. A sword that held his power. Only it wasn't really his. It was up to his little brother to keep reminding him of that. The flames, the strength, they belonged to Satan. Someone who he shouldn't rely on to fight for him. The evil being responsible for the death of Father Fujimoto, the only one he'd ever accept as being his father.
Wasn't it better though, to use his own powers for his own purposes? The abilities he'd passed on genetically, to one day destroy him? Rin had begun to think this way more frequently over the past months. What good would it do to be afraid of what could be his greatest advantage? He'd been training. Starting with very small steps of course. Tasks like lighting single candles and practicing his swordsmanship with the blade still sheathed. Progress was slow, but measurable. After all, he seemed to have nothing but time.
If he were ever to leave this place, to shake himself out of this state of listlessness, Rin knew he needed to have a goal in mind. Something to keep himself focused. To survive, was too vague, and rather bleak if he thought about it too much. No, it had to be something else.
To overcome this strangeness and gain back a normal life? Rin smiled to himself. That was a joke, a normal life wouldn't fit him anyway. Maybe putting it into words could wait. He just knew that there was no way he was giving up on getting out of here, or giving up on himself. Whatever was thrown at him next, he'd meet it happily.
