And from the ballroom floor we are in celebration. One good stretch before our hibernation

This was so ridiculous.

Kate had been pacing about her room for an hour, turning her closet, drawers, and piles of laundry inside out in search of anything in her wardrobe vaguely suitable for dinner. Well, dinner as in dinner date. With a vampire. Who was also over a hundred years old and probably had a very different idea of formal than she did. ( Read more... )

Nikola had been preening for quite some time. He was in one of his better suits - one that included a silk vest, white gloves and a white silk scarf. He'd stopped short of including a top hat - but only just.

Wrong century - sadly.

With ten minutes to go, Nikola decided to stop fussing and work up the nerve to head down to Kate's room. He waited outside the door for a few minutes, not wanting to appear too eager by being overly-early.

At a respectable time, he took a deep breath and knocked on her door - figiting one last time with his scarf.

Kate hopped up to her feet all too quickly at the sound of the knock. Almost nervously brushing some invisible lint off her clothes, she stepped slowly to the door, then quickly. Getting up her nerve, she turned the doorknob, opening it to reveal Nikola fidgeting out in the hall.

"Hey", she said casually, stepping out and shutting the door behind her. "So...think Magnus would flip if we took the Camerro?"

She looked gorgeous - but he did noto have the courage to say it so he simply offered her his arm.

"I believe that you are going to be a very poor influence on my otherwise good record when it comes to car theft."

Kate raised an amused eyebrow at his proffered arm before taking it with a certain degree of awkward manuevering.

"Please, I could boost a Camerro in my sleep", she grinned deviously, realizing that they were, for any seeing eyes, walking arm and arm through the Sanctuary,

"Plus, we've already earned like...six Magnus disapproval points tonight, why not go for bust?"

Kate had been expecting a couple days off after a rather grueling chupacabra hunt. Was that so much to ask? Will and Henry were in England tracking some lead on something, and she just wanted her bed and a carton of chunky monkey.

But no, apparently some of Declan's crew were trailing something through the catacombs of Paris and Helen wanted someone there to show them how it was done.

She'd protested-lightly, mostly concerning how all the french she spoke was the kind you couldn't say around children. But relented in the end.

Her flight left the next morning. She'd landed in the Sanctuary by early evening, ready to get this over with.

Nikola had not yet been dragged into the catacombs and thus was the only one milling around the Sanctuary when Kate arrived.

He had been expencting the werewolf - or Ashley. He had certainly not been expecting to look up and see Kate standing in the doorway of the foyer.

"Evening..." Nikola said carefully, still reading through the pile of mail at the front of the Sanctuary (not his mail).

"What brings you to Paris?"

Kate tensed on sight. She'd heard he'd moved on from the Sanctuary here, but apparently Helen had neglected to mention the part where he'd come back.

"Cleaning up your mess, apparently", She snapped darkly, pushing past him, "Again."

Nikola ended up pushed against a wall as she stormed past him. Old times, apparantly.

One thing was clear - she hadn't forgotten what had happened between them.

His only option was to be an arse.

"Hey - I'm here for the wine. I never agreed to help Helen catch a new pet."

"Mazel tav, yeah", Kate agreed, "But for the record, I am not a free babysitter."

"Me neither. I won't have them chewing on my lab equipment."
