They're Spies, Aren't They?

There was a Cabal Agent inside the Sanctuary.

Scratch that, there was another Cabal Agent inside the Sanctuary. Dana would keep pulling her puppetstrings as long as she was alive and useful, or at least as long as Kate had something or someone to lose. She tried not to think about what that would entail.

Kate knew she was walking a fine line between ( Read more... )

It's early in the morning when Nikola walks into the library to feed George. The pigeon is tapping furiously at the glass on the top level of the library. Some moron has closed the window on the poor creature and it's Nikola that suffers the lecture when he unlatches and opens the window.

"Come on - get off!" Nikola mutters, as the bird flaps around his head, pecking lightly at him. Nikola fishes the tin of bread out and breaks it up for the bird which at the very least earns him some peace as he heads back downstairs and saunters over to his desk. Well, not technically 'his' desk. It was an ordinary library desk pushed over by the window but everybody knew that it was now is and didn't dare go anywhere near it ( ... )

Kate was, unsurprisingly awake, early as it was. She didn't get much sleep these days anyway, and intentionally getting up at the crack of dawn was just another way of casually lying to herself about this fact.

Of course, there was nothing to do at such an early how, so mostly she ended up pacing her room, sitting back on the bed. Lying down, staring at the ceiling, pacing again.

She was trapped and out of good options with nothing to do but sit and wait for someone to jerk her in one direction or another. The sheer helplessness of it made her a little sick, to be honest.

Nikola had never been to Freelander's room but he knew precisely where to find it. He tucked the note into his jacket before his knocked rather sharply on the door.

He does not look particularly happy but he has come here to discover where Kate's loyalties lie once and for all. And if those are not with the Sanctuary, then she is going to be looking for a new home today - or a gravestone.

Who the hell would be knocking on her door at this hour? (Or at all, for that matter. She wasn't exactly on anyone's BFF list and generally kept to herself.)

Kate hopped up off the edge of the bed, turning the knob to reveal a very upset looking Nikola Tesla standing in the hall.

"What is it?" She sighed tiredly, bracing herself for a fresh round of whatever he had prepared.

Nikola was pretty much lording over any personal space that Kate may have had as he stared down at her with sharp, suspicious eyes.

"Are you or are you not still working for the Cabal?" he asked, no point dancing around the issue.

Kate took a small step back as he quite literally loomed over her in the doorway.

"No!", She snapped instantly, adding a silent yes, but not willingly in her mind so the lie would sting a little less.

"How many times do I have to tell people that?"

"Until people start believing it... Until I believe it. The protege may be letting you stay for the moment but if you fail to convince me of the sincerity of your - change of heart - then you'll be locked up downstairs until I can think of a use for you. There is a war coming and I will not have enemy pawns on this side of the fence. Not while I'm breathing."

Not while there was so much at stake.

Kate almost turned away from him, stepping aside enough to leave him room to shut the door. If nothing else she'd rather what he was about to say to echo down the halls.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to do to...convince you. I'm doing everything I can", the last words come off sad and desperate in a way she couldn't control. Anxiety and frustration bubbling to the surface as the truth began to escape her.

Nikola didn't close the door - he let it slam decidedly shut to re-enforce that she was trapped here.

"Do far Ms Freelander? You've done nothing to improve my opinion of you. Especially after your upset Morgana..." He had found her bloody and in tears.

"Yeah, that was a load of fun", Kate snapped before she could stop herself, subconsciously pulling her sleeves down to cover the still healing cuts on her forearms from her little meeting with Morgana.

She wants to stop, to draw back, but she doesn't know how not to react the way she does, she knows how to get angry when threatened all too well.

"Well what could I do?!Please, tell me if there was a single thing I could say or do that would help anything. It doesn't matter if I want to or not, I. Can't."

That rather enraged him.

"You could try showing a little fucking remorse... It's as if - as if you don't give a shit what you did - how you betrayed people that trusted you - that let you into their homes and lives. How could you sit there in the van with Morgana the whole way to the base knowing what you were doing? How?"

Exhaustion, mental, physical, and emotional had driven Kate far past the point of self control as the words just kept spilling out,

"Because I've spent ten fucking years shutting everything else out on the job, because that's how you survive, because I got in way over my head and couldn't admit that I couldn't handle it,it doesn't matter. But if you think I don't hate myself every damn minute of every damn day for what I did, then you're wrong."

She panted, almost shaking with barely tamped down emotion, "Who the hell did you think left you that note?"

Nikola was about to launch into a long trad - unmoved by her confession when she caught his attention.

Kate had left him the note?

"That was you?" he was still growling - the acute anger still present in his voice. "Why would you leave me such a thing? DO YOU THINK THIS IS A JOKE?"

In his present state of fury, he overlooks the material point, that there is a Cabal employ other than Kate running around.

"Would you just QUIT SHRIEKING for a second?!" Kate snapped, as he was clearly missing the point,

"Look, I don't know who they are, or how long they've been here, but they're here and even if I knew when their goddamn birthday was, I still couldn't touch them."

He was starting to get it now.

"There's another Cabal sleeper inside this Sanctuary...?" his eyes were flared with a mixture of anger and alarm. "How do you know this, Kate - and why couldn't you touch them?" It sounded awfully like she was still in the fold of the Cabal... however much she denied it.

"Apparently", Kate sighed heavily, sounding pained, "It could have just been another mindfuck to try and keep me playing nice but...I don't think so."

No, she knew Dana Whitcomb, the woman didn't bluff, mostly because the bitch was two steps ahead and didn't need to.

"I just can't", she said simply, hoping he'd drop that part of the subject.
