Heart beat, a heart beat, I need a heart beat, a heart -tell me would you kill to save a life?

Kate doesn't dream. Doesn't ponder, doesn't drift, doesn't wander, the silence and the blackness in her head is absolute and enveloping. It's curled around her like a child's play cape, dark silk, thick enough with regret and memory to smother ( Read more... )

Nigel shuffled quietly into Kate's room. He had seen Morgana leave earlier and he wanted to check on Kate for himself.

She looked asleep and he didn't want to wake her. He moved to sit tirely in the chair beside her bed. He wrapped his robe tightly around himself. Mogause has brought him some of his own clothes and he felt more comfortable dispite feeling ill.

He sat staring at her, trying desperatly not to think of how she looked when they had found her.

Kate was trying to sleep, to little avail. Her body seemed sure that it had rested enough, and no matter how long she rested her eyes and tried to clear her thoughts, it didn't seem to matter. She heard the dull shuffle of footsteps growing nearer, and rolled back on her back to see who it was. Her shoulder was starting to throb from laying on it anyway.

Nigel, yes, she remembered his voice, back there? Couldn't be sure. She opened her eyes the rest of the way,

"You look like shit." She murmured softly.

"Hello Kate," Nigel said warmly, if tiredly. "You're looked better," he statted. "How are ou feeling?" he asked ignoring her observation about how he looked.

She felt like she'd been run over by a bus, twice, but it was nothing compared to what the last few weeks had been like. She had a feeling he understood that very well. Kate shrugged, a very small movement, "I'm alright."

"No, you're not," he told her in a gently chiding voice, but you will be," he added. "Lord, you look so much better than when we found you," he said said tightly, his voice catching a little.

Her voice caught before she could reply, and she dropped her gaze a little, trying not to think about it. Kate moved to brush a straw strand of hair behind her ear, something her gauze wrapped mitts couldn't manage to do. Her hand throbbed deep within the mess of bandages even from the slight movement, she dropped it with a wince.

"I don't remember", she said softly.

Nigel leaned forward and brushed the strand of hair behind her ear gently. His hand was as cold as ice and trembled slightly.

"Hey," he said gently. "It's alright now. You're safe and all you have to do is concentrate on healing," he said softly. "Don't worry about trying to remember it now. All you need to remember is that you were not alone and people came for you. People who care for you."

Kate flinched reflexively when he touched her cheek, and not just because his skin was icy. She bit the inside of his cheek, trying to force down the weakness she was sure was coming through in her eyes, the vulnerabilty. To be truthful, she was barely keeping it together, her conversation with Morgana was already making her remember things she wasn't ready to deal with.

"How long?" She asked quietly.

He kept his touch gentle, remembering how much he flinched away from any touch when he had first come. He brushed the backs of his finger against her cheek, reassuringly. He understood much better than most exactly how she felt right now.

"Nigh on a month," he said very softly. "We didn't know where you had gone at first, but came for you the moment we knew where you were and that you were in trouble," he told her.

A month? How...? She'd thought days, a couple weeks at most. It had been impossible to tell, it felt like one day, one hour that never ended. But she supposed torture would do that to you. She doesn't really want to be touched, but can't manage to shrug away from him as he traced the line of her cheekbone. Less than twelve hours before the same spot had been laid open with a deep gash, now, not a mark.

"Well, that's something", Kate murmured, wishing she could feel more relief or gratitude for the unexpected rescue. Wishing she could feel anything.

Nigel withdrew his hand not wishing to cause her more discomfort. "I should let you rest," he told her tiredly, swallowing hard againt the memories of just a few hours ago. Seeing her body-- He swallowed hard against a sudden surge of nausia.

"I'm just down the hall if you need someone. I'm sure we're both being watched so if you need something, just call out,' he told her, moving to stand, but he sat back down as a wave of dizziness washed through him. he took a moment to collect himself and then got to his feet.

He pulled his hand back quickly, making her wonder what expression she'd betrayed in her face. His brow was furrowed in thought and he looked almost...green, pale and ill. Kate nodded silently, watching him carefully as he got up and staggered away.

Nigel paused at the door and turned.

"Kate, your not alone now.You have people who can about you. Don`t forget that."
