Comedy in all its forms

We've been interviewing people for a one-year temp position in the department, and yesterday was the final day of interviews. (And if I have to have one more awkward lunch with a complete stranger, I'll scream--no idea how I got stuck with lunch duty. Well, actually I do. It's because I said I didn't want to do dinners.)

Anyway, the final candidate was giving her job talk to a colleague's class. I'd had a number of students in there, and for every candidate's talk, several would come up and chat with me.

One such student was a girl I've had several times who's in a wheelchair. She's developed this very boisterous personality (I think to compensate for being in a wheelchair), but I always enjoyed talking with her.

Prior to Candidate 3's talk, I took a seat in the back and this student wheeled up next to me. I smiled, a little touched. Candidate 3 began to talk about her research, which consisted mostly of work in diversity and what it means.

"People make assumptions about you when you aren't a white male. For instance, if you're..." she scanned the room and her eyes landed on my student, "in a wheelchair. People make assumptions about you the minute you walk into a room."

And my student, my awesome, boisterous student, turned to me and said (loudly), "Snrrrk, walk?"
