I had gotten really sick of the stuff on my I-tunes at work, so I've gone down the hill to Easy Street Records a couple of times lately to get some new music. Before I rip the CDs I always go in and change the genre entry. Most of the stuff I listen to is tagged "alternative & punk". I thought "indie" was a code-phrase meant to lower expectations on production values. Indie = Good game, but average-to-bad layout and art.

Small press or creator owned don't really evoke that. I think.

The Pogues (I really like Hell's Ditch) and the still-around-touring-Europe-but-local-to-me Dropkick Murphys.

Right, of course! For some reason I was picturing something more acoustic, like the Chieftains on an angry drunk.

Actually, that describes some of the Pogues songs I've heard, doesn't it?

Sure. I'm talking about bands like the Skels, the Tossers, Flogging Molly, and the Dropkick Murphys.
