I love covers.
As in when one band covers another's material. Particularly when a band from one genre picks up a tune from a completely other Genre. Usually, I find the cover better than the original, at least to my ears, particularly if it's been rearranged.
Case in point: Travis, one of my favourite groups of the past 5 years, did a killer cover of Britney Spears ...Baby one more time. Acoustically. The first time I heard it, I had to pull off the road, I was laughing so hard. It's vaguely tongue in cheek, but brilliantly arranged.
So here's a few other I love, in no particular order:
Hurt - Johnny Cash
I will survive - Cake
Bertha (an old Grateful Dead tune) - Los Lobos
Three is a magic number (from the old show Schoolhouse Rocks) - Blind Melon
Gin and juice - The Gourds (somehow rearranged as a bluegrass tune; absolutely brilliant.)
In my life - Johnny Cash
Hard luck woman - Garth Brooks (apparently, a huge KISS fan)
Anyone have any other good ones to add? I know I'm forgetting some.
