A couple of months ago I stumbled across the TV version of Campion on Ebay and spontaneously fell in love with the character. So the vids led to books and the books to fanfic...
I'm still not 100% sure whether I'm getting him right, though. He's a good muse and great fun to write, but can be a bit tricky at times.
The TV adaptions are well worth seeing. Very true to the books, with only a few alterations here and there for dramaturgical reasons. Thanks to the general quality of scripts and acting, the humourous bits and mild irony work as well as the more serious scenes, and Peter Davison's portrayal is well-nuanced and charming.
As for the novels: I think they are memorable rather for their characters than their actual plots. I'm currently reading Police at the Funeral , and while I could not care less about who killed Uncle Andrew, I find Allingham's depiction of the dysfunctional family dynamics totally priceless.
