TV
Jarod/Parker, The Pretender
So it may not have escaped your attention that I love cheesy science fiction shows to a ludicrous degree, and this was one of the first I ever remember seeing. And, yes, it was formulaic, and, yes, I got bored with Jarod’s woe-is-me story every damn week, but I never got bored with Parker or the dynamic between these two characters.
As far as baggage goes, her father had a part in kidnapping Jarod from his family, locked him up like a lab rat and studied him for the first thirty years of his life. Jarod and Parker were childhood friends and sweethearts. Her mother was killed; she became harder. She went to work for the Centre, and when Jarod escapes, it’s her job to track him down and bring him back. Along the way (to never achieving that goal, and eventually not really wanting to anyway), there are things like that time Parker thought Jarod’s father murdered her mother, or that other time she thought his brother did. That time they might have been siblings, and that time they found out they shared one. Also, at one point Jarod set Parker up with her only steady love interest (later killed by the Centre, of course), which was weirdly the creepiest part of their strange relationship for me.
But through all that, they remain each other’s touchstone, that link that somehow bridges past and present. Also, the few times they were actually allowed to share screentime together, it was always smoking hot.

Rain Runs Cold by
juliefortuneSummary: Miss Parker, Jarod and a flood.
(Pretty much the saddest and best Parker/Jarod story ever. Also, I know this is a long shot, but Julie Fortune used to have a whole series of Parker/Jarod fics that have disappeared. If anyone saved them, I’d love to have them all.)
Movie
Gordon/Selina, A Patch of Blue
If you’re looking for a movie couple with baggage, your best bet is always going to be a ‘60s drama. The problem is also finding one worth shipping. I basically make it a mission in life (classic fan, though I am) to avoid all movies made in that decade. I make two exceptions: Audrey Hepburn and Sidney Poitier. And this movie is one of my favorites of his.
It’s about the blind daughter of a horribly abusive mother, who finally finds someone to trust and love in an older black man. And he, in her, finds someone, who maybe for the first time in his life, sees him just for himself, no racial barrier attached. The performances in this movie are, across the board, fantastic, and the love story is so moving and gentle and slow that it contrasts vividly with Selina’s horrible life at home. If you’ve never seen this movie, I highly recommend it.

Book
‘Con-trary!’ said a voice as sweet as a silver bell. ‘That for the third time, you dunce! I’m not going to tell you again. Recollect, or I’ll pull your hair!’
‘Contrary, then,’ answered another, in deep but softened tones. ‘And now, kiss me, for minding so well.’
‘No, read it over first correctly, without a single mistake.’
The male speaker began to read: he was a young man, respectably dressed and seated at a table, having a book before him. His handsome features glowed with pleasure, and his eyes kept impatiently wandering from the page to a small white hand over his shoulder, which recalled him by a smart slap on the cheek, whenever its owner detected such signs of inattention. Its owner stood behind; her light, shining ringlets blending, at intervals, with his brown looks, as she bent to superintend his studies; and her face-it was lucky he could not see her face, or he would never have been so steady. I could; and I bit my lip in spite, at having thrown away the chance I might have had of doing something besides staring at its smiting beauty.
The task was done, not free from further blunders; but the pupil claimed a reward, and received at least five kisses; which, however, he generously returned.
~Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, Chapter XXXII
This brings me to my choice for book pairing which was, of course, Hareton/Catherine.
When it comes to the Bronte sisters, I’m firmly in the Charlotte camp. I don’t especially like Wuthering Heights, because I find Heathcliff and Cathy to be among the least likable, most selfish, most miserable leading characters ever created. But then something wonderful happens towards the end of the book, something I find just genius in Emily Bronte-all of Heathcliff’s scheming and machinations, all of Cathy’s willful self-destruction turns on its head, and Cathy’s daughter falls in love with the boy Heathcliff set out to make less than nothing. And it happens through small, mutual acts of kindness. These young adults, whose youth has been stolen and warped by their horrible parents and guardians, still choose a better path. So as far as I’m concerned, they’re the true love story of that book, and they get a well-deserved happy ending.
