YAY! I'm so glad my little reading tip worked! This grad school stuff is helping after all! Another thing you may want to do, maybe as he gets a little more into the year and becomes more comfortable with decoding, is have him monitor his comprehension to see if he understands. Have him make a prediction before each page, read it, tell you what he read and then ask a question about what he read. Metacognition! (my thesis topic!) Really helps higher thinking skills. Of course, you may have to wait until he reads more involved books. Fred who lives in a bed with his dog Ned may not have enough to it to practice the metacog skills! To practice short and long vowel sounds, word family cards work really well too. You can play a memory game where Mitchell can match up cat and bat or map and sap. Stick with one sound per game but different word families. The probably even have pre made games at Becker's.

I am glad you are in abetter place today...but your blood bank guy sounds so annoying. Funny story... you should write an article about your strange interviewees... "Adventures in Interviewing."
