Furry Furry

Last night my friend whom I call Squirrel linked me to an old Furry survey I apparently posted here in LJ several years ago. Reading through it again made me realize how much of a total doofus I was. A lot has changed in several years!

I used to be a very big furry, but the fandom is pretty much dead to me now, and here's why:

I used to watch all these great furry shows in the past, such as Tale Spin and Jim Henson's Dog City. There were also lots of great furry movies such as The Secret of NIMH. I loved watching these shows cause, well, they were good. I never was interested in those non-furry cartoons because they just weren't as good. I started drawing 'furries' back when The Disney Afternoon aired. There also was all those good furry games, like Bubsy and Star Fox.

Then everything crashed and burned. After Ren and Stimpy aired, other studios tried to copy their success. I assume that's why there were lots of shows at that time with hideous character designs and lame potty humour. You'd think they'd get out of that fad and start making awesome shows again, but apparently that never happened. Nobody cared about quality anymore.

Unfortunately the same thing happened with movies. Nowadays all these studios rely on really lame jokes and famous voice actors to sell their crappy animated movies. Whatever happened to the real voice actors?? It didn't help that the last 2D movie from Disney was one of the worse movies I have ever seen. Wrapping steaks to my body and jumping into a lion cage is infinitely more entertaining than that sludgepile of stinkin' poop.

After a string of lame shows and even lamer movies (of course there's some exceptions though), I just found myself not caring anymore.

It didn't help with the games too. I never see furries in any deep thinking games, like RPGs, simulations and the like. They're all either platformers or puzzle games or whatever. Lots of these characters never get any depth to them. It was fine back then 'cause I was a kid who didn't know any better, but now that I'm older I tend to only like characters who actually have some development to them.

If I wasn't such a fan of them way back then, maybe I would've started drawing people and other things instead. I got a lot of characters whom I created that I can't even draw to show people what they look like : / I envy my friend Jammer for her awesome artistic talent with people. I wish I could go back in time and start over again but that's impossible of course :(

So the only thing I like is the artwork. Everything else is dead to me now. I still enjoy all those great movies and TV shows of the past and I still love Godzilla (dunno if that's even considered furry), Sam and Max and Digimon though.

The problem is that since people know me as a big furry, they still think I'm one regardless of what I tell them. I guess it's the whole "Leopards can't change their spots" thing. Bah.
