Today, during English, my lecturer posed the questions "Is the Book Dead or Alive?" and it began one hell of a debate...
Everyone hating on kindles because they love the smell of books, people admitting that they don't even read for enjoyment any more even though they're teaching students so therefore we should be promoting reading for enjoyment and stating that, yes, the book is most definitely dead.
However, in my honest opinion, for as long as people are reading - electronic or paper - than the book, or the literary word, is most definitely still alive!
Yes, I love a good book. Hell. You all know how much I love my books - even though I am only on book six of fifty-two out of my 2012 challenge (whoops!) - and how they've always been a key part of my life because, for me, they're escapism. But despite my love of books, I have asked my family if they'll buy me a kindle and a voucher so I can get a few books on it for my twenty-first birthday.
A kindle, in my opinion, is an amazing idea! I'll be able to go on holiday with about a thousand books in storage rather than sacrificing clothes because I can't decide between twelve books - mother yells at me EVERY HOLIDAY for this very reason. But with a Kindle, you don't need to decide. They're there.
Research also shows that more and more books are being published every year because of the demand for them so surely that means print hasn't died either?
So... Now I ask you... In your opinion, is the book dead or alive?
