4. The first time Silva visits David at home. All these years, and he's never been; but, David says, this time, it's a celebration.

Olaya is almost three months old when David hands him the invitation - thick, creamy paper, addressed in beautiful calligraphy. "Patricia insisted." David shrugs. Silva has a fleeting urge to rip the card into pieces.

It's a disaster from the start, if you can measure disaster through emotional damage sustained: David opening the door, holding Zaida's hand; Patricia coming to say hello, Olaya in her arms; Zaida asking Silva for a hug; a family portrait on the wall with Olaya already in it. Silva grips his champagne flute so tightly that his knuckles turn white, so tightly that David leans in and mutters, "Don't break the glass."

Silva laughs, harsh, until he realises that David isn't joking. "Sorry." He clears his throat, smiles at Patricia and the (oh God) children. "Excuse-"

"-us," David cuts in.

This is the way it always happens with David: all of a sudden, out of nowhere, no indication of emotion (or, not enough); Silva never figures out what is happening until it is all over. Here is David now, here is Silva now, in the foyer - a respectable distance apart; Silva has been making sure. And here is David the next minute, here is Silva the next minute, somehow around back -

Too close. Definitely too close; that was a kiss, and this is just. ("David," Silva gasps.) Inappropriate.

"We can't do this -" a pause, as David works his way down Silva's neck, ""

"But," and David finds Silva's collarbone, talks wetly around it, "I don't want to say goodbye." It's a concession, the most Silva has ever gotten, ever, and he doesn't even want it, he just wants - well, he just wants, though it's not pure and it's not simple. Selfish, there it is again; a word Silva hates because it encompasses him and he cannot escape it.

Ugh, those empty quotation marks where I never figured out what Villa should say. I played with that part for the longest time, writing sentences and deleting them, but I still never found something I liked enough to keep. I think that's largely what got in the way of my finishing this; I kept circling around on that one sentence for so long that eventually I gave up on the whole thing altogether. Anyway, writing about footballers and their significant others-99% sure I'm never doing that again.

The first time they kiss. Silva doesn't like the words "first" and "kiss" in close succession; "first kiss," like that. It makes him feel childish and juvenile and like a teenager (nothing that David doesn't incite in him, anyway), nothing he particularly wishes to recall.
