Thanks to Daisy Princessfor alerting me about it I was able to meet Francesca Lia Block and witness the magic of the novel "Weetzie Bat" come to life a few Sundays ago at Book Soup in Hollywood. I parked in the old Tower Records parking lot ($5 for parking all day? YES!) Then I crossed the street with this lady who asked me if I was going to the ( Read more... )

I'm so glad you went, I mean, you were on your own but you were with like minded people and you got to meet Francesca, how amazing!

This screenreading sounded amazing, like they put on a whole experience for the audience and themselves. I think some actors were there to help out with the reading itself as Francesca had a few status updates looking for actors to help out at the reading a few weeks/days prior to the reading!

Oh man, it was total kismet that you told her that story because it meant she could tell you about her workshop which sounds like a fantastic opportunity.

I think it's nice that the man was interested in the book, not so good about the creepy vibes but if he was interested and curious about the books, it's always good to know where to start. Dangerous Angels is one of my most favourite books, I love all of the stories and think Dirk and Witchbaby are my favourite characters. Girl Number 9 is probably my other favourite of hers, as some of the stories always stick in my mind, Raven always makes me cry!
I must see what newer books she has out, How To Uncage a Girl sounds intriguing, but it's always fun re-reading her older ones too.
Did she sign the new ones you bought?

What is the 101 Coffee Shop like? Reading Francesca's setting of L.A always made me want to visit all the little places that real L.A people go to! Ashley sent me a great book about places in L.A that have vintage shops and interesting places to visit, I can't wait to come back again soon.

Thank you for writing this up, and I can't wait to hear about what it will be like at the workshop for you, next weekend! Have fun and be inspired!

Reading a review of Weetzie Bat, and these lines jumped out at me as Drew always refers to Flower Films as her family, and I wonder if she's ever read Weetzie Bat or Francesca's stories? Quick, someone send the screenplay to Flower Films, haha!

"While escapsm might not sound like the healthiest habit for the young adult set, Weetzie Bat is a refreshing, delicious mirage for those who need it. If there is indeed an underlying message to the story, it would be: create your own family, if you lack the luck of being born into the family you need, you can find a new one. This is precisely the message needed to be sent to those dissociated, daydreaming 13-year-olds."

That's so funny you would mention that because while listening to the reading I was thinking about "Whip It" and it reminded me of "finding your tribe". I wouldn't be surprised if Drew has read or at least heard of Francesca.. I mean Weetzie Bat came out when Drew was a teen. Haha, wouldn't it be rad if Flower Films got involved with it??! To dream.... :)
